Gloriously illustrated and impressive in scope, this book represents a comprehensive overview of ancient Nubia. It opens with a thematic survey with contributors addressing topics such as the rediscovery of ancient Nubia and the development of archaeological work there, including the widespread destruction in the wake of the construction of the Aswan and Merowe dam, its physical geography, and historical outline. There follow chronological reviews of Nubia's art and architecture, chapters on cultural aspects such as religion, burial practices, texts, daily life, costume and pottery. The second half of the book consists of a gazetteer of sites, following the course of the Nile from North to South: descriptions of the archaeology are accompanied by plentiful plans and photos as well as notes on the history of their excavation.

"This beautifully illustrated volume offers the general reader a survey of this little-known civilization and is highly recommended."--Library Journal"[B]rings the ancient unknown kingdom of Nubia alive through essays and beautiful photos."--Booklist"[Ancient Nubia: African Kingdoms on the Nile] is arguably the definitive work on the subject to date. And the on-location lush color photographs of Chester Higgins Jr. are worthy of a volume of their own!"--KMT: A Modern Journal of Ancient Egypt

5.0 von 5 Sternen Absolutly Fantastic!!!!!! 11. März 2013

The information is written in a form that is easy to understand by non-historians, and highlights a chapter in world history that has been overlooked for far too long. The contributions of ancient Nubia to all aspects of mankind's development is finally being done justice. As a professional photographer having spent three weeks in Egypt in 2011shotting over 2,500 pictures, the quality of the photography by Chester Higgins Jr. is exceptional, and is exemplary of his work throughout a long , and illustrious career.

5.0 von 5 Sternen The student's perspective 29. Januar 2013
Von Cierra D. - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
As a student who studies Ancient Civilization, such as Nubia, I can honestly say this book is the best I've read on such a culture. Not only is it laid out with the student in mind--building on information and laying the necessary groundwork early on for understanding later chapters--but it is written tightly and directly so that it is easy to understand. The book doesn't get caught up in its own esoteric language. It's accessible and I don't find myself (as with other texts), scratching my head wondering whether what I'm reading is relevant. The authors did an excellent job including the necessities and cutting out the things that could be confusing. The chapter on the History of Nubia and Art and Architecture were especially well organized and meaningful to me and my studies. On both subjects I don't think I've ever read something so short, yet concise and complete. It saved me a lot of time looking for information!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Lots of Information, great photography 21. Juni 2014

Great book by many experts on ancient Nubia. Really helps bring alive a very mysterious culture that rival ancient Egypt (their empire was the largest of the ancient empires and included all of Egypt in the 25th dynasty). This book covers the time period from about 10,000 BCE to through the collapse of the Meroitic empire just before the Arab conquest of Byzantine Egypt. Charts and diagrams make everything clear along with amazing photographs of Sudan and Southern Egypt. Bought it for a course I was taking, but it is a must for anyone interested in ancient Egypt's rival in Africa.
