More than a guide for how to survive economically as an artist, "An Artistic Guide to Economic Survival," by Jake Kot is an important reminder of why we, as artists, must do what we do and a guide to how we can do it better. Written in what Kot -- a composer, arranger, bassist, teacher and designer -- calls "Musicalese", the book focuses on helping us as artists discover and develop change within ourselves, which then leads naturally to a positive change in our approach to work -- and ultimately, our lives.
Kot uses insightful quotes and anecdotes from a variety of artists as springboards to convey his hard won wisdom (the result of decades of knowledge + experience as a musician, composer and arts advocate) as well as his passion for the arts. The book addresses issues core to any artist such as, how to think about and overcome fear and mistakes, the importance of being yourself, the art of listening, and more.
