Useful for painting soldiers

I bought this book because I cast and paint metal toy soldiers. This book was very useful for showing various equipment configurations and also various colours used. Often when painting figures, one can get caught up in striving to get the colour "historically accurate." Sometimes it can become an obsession. This book shows, without intending to, that fabrics can, and do, fade and that colours can often be at artist discretion. Also, since so much US gear is produced from multiple factories and with different dye lots, it helps to see other colour possibilities.
The photographs are wonderful and most are in colour. There are several b/w photos which are used to show equipment in historical context. The text can be a bit dry at times but I bought it for the photos and identification of what can sometimes be frustratingly difficult to identify pieces of equipment.

A good introduction.

I have always been interested in militaria, and I wanted to know just how varied "uniform" equipment actually was back then. This book that is a good start for anyone interested in this topic. It's laid out in simple, straightforward, and comprehensive fashion. I am sure there are more detailed works out there, but as an introduction, this book fills the bill nicely.

Good book on US equipment

American Web Equipment: 1910-1967 is a good, but not excellent reference book detailing US issue field gear from pre- WWI to the Vietnam era. Although the book does not go into depth in it's description of each item, or include much information on manufacturers marks, it does well in discussing the development of web gear in general and the US issued items specifically. Lots of good pictures make this a reference edition that a true collector should not be without and a good starting point for an in depth look at issued gear.
