As a horror writer myself, I always find it interesting to see how other people tackle the genre.

This collection is full of a diverse cast of voices, each with their own story to tell and their own unique way of telling it. I found the collection a pleasant read and am pleased to report that the horror genre is alive and well.

Although I must admit, the most horrifying tale of all was Scott Nicholson's introduction, 'The Last American Horror Writer'. It painted a haunting picture of the utter disregard many people seem to have for the genre and the 'compromises' made in an attempt to pass off horror for what it wasn't by many big name authors. Like an iceberg calving into shards, the horror genre was splintering into several different sub-genres.

With the introduction of the Kindle and the free reign authors now possess on their own content, the future for horror, and all fiction, looks bright.

As Scott Nicholson says in his aptly named introduction, "The Last American Horror Writer", there had seemed to be what you would call a dropping off of quality horror novels and collections in recent years. There was an uprising of diluted horror that was called other things and fit into other genres. The editor and authors within this anthology set out to make a statement: that horror is still very alive and well, and they succeed.

The pages within the book contain a spectrum of horrifying fun. From Lisa Morton's mysterious graffiti artist and his dark secret, to a mortifying glimpse into the depravity of human apathy in Joe McKinney's Starvation Army.

Horror fills this anthology to the brim and then overflows, so don't despair- this is horror concentrated and it seems to be back with a vengeance!

I loved this short story collection of dark fiction. In all there are 8 stories by some wonderful authors: Kealan Patrick Burke, Simon Wood, and Joe McKinney among others.
My favorite was "Outside" by Kealan Patrick Burke. This was a tale worthy of the X Files or Twilight Zone. Freaky and creepy-just my thing.
My other favorites were: "The Sunseeker" by Simon Wood "Though Thy Lips Be Pale" by Maria Alexander. There is also an introduction by Scott Nicholson regarding the state of horror today. There were a couple of stories that I didn't really care for, but that is not unusual for me when reading an anthology such as this.
All in all, I think this book proves that horror is alive and well. It reminds me of the time when magazines with stories such as this would catch my eye at the bookstore/newstand. They may not be available at the brick and mortar stores anymore, but the ebooks can be found. I am glad that I found this one!
