Stannard (history, Univ. of Hawaii-Manoa), whose previous works include Shrinking History: On Freud and the Failure of Psychohistory ( LJ 6/1/80) and Before the Horror: The Population of Hawaii on the Eve of Western Contact (Univ. of Hawaii Pr., 1989), turns his attention to the devastating impact of the European intrusion into the New World. He argues that with more than 100 million people the Americas were not the unpopulated open spaces so often described and notes the squalor and disease that dominated Europe in contrast to the relative peace and harmony that prevailed in the New World. The arrival of the Spanish and other Europeans, he argues, brought about a demographic disaster of incredible proportions--the largest genocide in history--as a result of disease and depredation, as well as through enslavement and outright massacre. Though Stannard tends to gloss over violence and intertribal warfare in pre-Columbian America and accepts accounts of Spanish atrocities by early chroniclers as well as high population estimates for pre-Columbian America, his is a carefully researched, well-written monograph based on the latest secondary sources. A provocative account for public and academic libraries.

Along with Native American activist Ward Churchill, David Stannard stands at the forefront of the intellectual movement to elucidate the truth concerning America's (and Canada's) past and present treatment of Native Americans. Scholastic and readable, "American Holocaust" overwhelms readers with its devastating implications: not only has the North American population not come to grips with the reality of its brutal and genocidal heritage, the "American Holocaust"is an ongoing event. I also highly recommend Theodore Roosevelt's "The Winning of the West" as supplemental reading to Stannard"s "American Holocaust" - it helps put events in perspective.

For years people told me the Holocaust of 6 million Jews was the worst case of genocide ever. Not even close. My college history professor gave me Stannard's book to read. Reading it allowed me to give a speech and write a research paper on genocide. ... As far as I'm concerned, we owe the Native Americans all the land found in the Western Hemispere. I also look at the history of the Europeans' "brave and valiant" exploring plus much of the history about our ""brave and valiant" forefathers and some of the leaders in the past as nothing more than historical propoganda. This nation was not founded on the blood of our forefathers. It was founded on the blood of more than 100 million Native Americans.

To anyone who challenges the veracity of David Stannard's historical facts and accounts on the Spaniards pitiless cruelty toward the American Indians should also read DOGS OF THE CONQUEST by Author: JOHN GRIER VARNER. Regretfully the hardcover is out of print but can be checked out at your local library. Hopefully the publisher will reprint it in a paperback mode. It relates to Christopher Columbus and the Spaniards who brought to the new world a very large breed of mastiff dogs specifically trained to hunt, tear up, kill and feed from the Indians flesh ... men, women or children. For the Spaniards it was a simple (bloody) sport to entertain themselves, because they regarded the natives as sub-humans or animals. Where the Spaniards left off in their goal to exterminate the Indians, the Bristish and the American Colonists and forefathers took over as related in the "TRAIL OF TEARS" by Author: GLORIA JAHODA and in "BURY MY HEART AT WOUNDED KNEE" by Author: DEE BROWN. I highly recommend American Holocust by David Stannard. It should be a required reading for all high school students. It's about time the truth be finally told about the quasi total extermination of a noble race.
