Kurzbeschreibung

The phone rings.

Will is glad he didn't go straight to bed after his shift. The call is probably Derek. After a night of bar hopping he’s probably too drunk to drive and needs a ride home.

At such a late hour Reverend Wallace wonders which elderly member of his congregation has died.

Nearly asleep Laura knows she shouldn't answer the phone in the middle of the night, but it could be her husband who is out of town.

They are wrong.

In the wake of a senseless and horrific crime a city is torn apart and a nation is in shock. As investigators delve into the lives of the suspect and the victims they unravel an even darker mystery. A grieving community will struggle to deal with the consequences of the secrets that are revealed. Secrets that will leave no life untouched.

Mehr über den Autor

Allen Renfro is a native of Tennessee currently making his residence in Knoxville. A graduate of Tusculum College he is recognized as an author of dark fiction who unabashedly tackles controversial subjects.

Allen is the author of five novels including the bestselling Bridge Water and Snap. The critically acclaimed novel Snap is described as one of the most controversial and challenging thrillers in years addressing the issues of male prostitution and vigilante justice. Bridge Water, his fourth novel, blends murder, sexuality and humor to create a southern flavored novel that is unlike any of his previous works. The Raised and The Falling, the first two novels in the Morrelini Chronicles, take biblical history and reworks them into an epic supernatural series that follows the struggles of Adam O'Brien and the Morrelini family as they journey through the "second life." Allen's latest novel, Ambiguity, addresses the conflict of religion and sexuality and the dangers of keeping secrets.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Wait...WHAT?! 28. Mai 2014

*Mild Spoilers*

Overall I did enjoy this book. It was a sequel to Bridge Water, and had all of the same characters. The writing style was good, and the writer kept me engaged in the story. The premise was very dark, and unfortunately completely plausible. It could happen at any time, in any city in this country, and that is a truly scary thought. I don't want to give too much of the plot away, because it really was a decent book. However, what really ticked me off, and the reason for the three stars is that two people who had started the whole crime ball rolling and revealed to be seriously twisted individuals were never discovered by the police to be brought to justice. The book ends rather ubruptly, and I wouldn't say it was a cliffhanger, but it's not fully resolved. I hope there will be another novel in this series to tie up those loose ends, but there is no indication in the book that there will be.

This is not a romance novel in the traditional sense. The romance between Will and Derrick is more of a side story and has little to do with the plot. It is an important part of the book, but by no means the focus. There is also a lot of religion based hate in this book.

Throughout the book, you think you know the who-done-its and the whys and hows of the mystery, because it seems the writer is being up front about it, but you would be wrong. It was well done, and had quite a few twists and turns, I just wish all of the guilty parties would have gotten what they deserved.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Hooked on Page One 6. Juni 2014

Ambiguity hooked me on page one. Gunfire, explosions, swat team… It kept me on the edge of my seat. At first, I didn’t realize this was a sequel to another book - Bridge Water, but it didn’t matter, I had no problem following the story. Yes, there is romance, but the relationship between Will and Derrick is only part of this entertaining thriller that centers on a killing spree. The characters are real and the plot kept me guessing with its many twists and turns. Two thumbs up. I’m going to get a copy of Bridge Water now.

5 Hearts from MM Good Book Reviews

This story is part of a series but can be read as a stand-alone. The ringing of the phone late at night heralds the shocking tragedy that rocks a community. Will is just settling down for the night and picks up the phone thinking its Derek calling, but the call has him scrambling for his gun and badge. Reverend Ed Wallace reaches for the phone wondering which elderly parishioner needs aid, but the call has him watching the news in a state of shock. Laura wonders who could be calling so late at night and receives shocking news that has her at the hospital wondering if they made a mistake. A night out to celebrate a birthday ends in tragedy; a mystery unfolds as the police scramble for clues and people’s lives are shattered as secrets come out.

This is an amazing story that had me gripped from the onset; I didn’t want to put it down and only slept after the hubby pried the Kindle from my hands *grumble*. As much as I want to rave about this story I so don’t want to say anything that would ruin it for you, it’s a true suspense, mystery, thriller story that leads you around trying to piece the clues together as the police discover each new thread. I will give you the basic’s though, a war hero suffering from PTSD goes on a rampage and as the police, Will, Kyle and their colleagues, try to find out what made him do it they find links to a church. As the investigation progresses Reverend Ed Wallace comes under suspicion but finding something solid is proving to be impossible.

Ah, this story was a true pleasure to read, it was sooo good to lose myself in a brilliant story that is twisty and clues are sparse, where the characters drag you into the story and the plot keeps you gripped. Derek is injured in the tragedy and is holed up in the hospital for a large part of this book; his lover Will is more prominent along with Derek’s partner Kyle as they investigate. Laylay (Eric Layton) was caught up in the tragedy and has his own way of coping with the fear, as he offers support to Laura and Derek he rails against the religion that spews hate. Many lives are affected as secrets begin to come out and you begin to understand that events go much deeper than just one hate-filled man suffering from PTSD.

The story is from many perspectives so we can see everything that is going on, it moves smoothly and you never lose the thread of whose perspective it is. The story starts out with a bang and as it continues, we are given more surprises and ulterior motives for what is happening. Finding out what was going on was a bit of a surprise, and there are still shocks to be had as we approach the end… and the ending well I never saw that coming. There are many gay characters and the main couple is Derek and Will but their relationship takes a back burner to the mystery/suspense but we do see a brief touching moment between them, to get the history of Will and Derek’s relationship then you’d have to read Bridge Water, the first Detective Derek Cooper book.

I recommend this to those that love mystery and suspense, who love a little thriller in their stories, who love great characters who are solidly written, a story that keeps you on your toes and a jaw dropping ending.
