2.0 von 5 Sternen AWS online tutorials are moch more useful 4. April 2014
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
I was hoping for a hands-on approach, with some worked out real world examples of how to use all amazon services together but ended up disappointed. I think the best way to learn AWS is to read through some online tutorial examples provided (for free!) by amazon itself. This book reads like a +300p advertisement trying to convince readers how great AWS actually is.

2.0 von 5 Sternen I was disappointed in this 9. Februar 2014
Von Brent Butler - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
When I consider using a book like this, I want to see step by step instructions on how to do commonly desired tasks. What I found instead is more of an AWS dictionary with some advice mixed in here and there.

For example, do you want to set up a network where some or all of your AWS server instances can interact with each other? There's a great looking chapter title in the book. It talks about it for a few pages. Does it anywhere show where to start and what to do in order to accomplish this?

No.

That's what I was looking for.

I found very little in this book that isn't just regurgitated from the AWS documentation and marketing materials. Instead, it needs to be hands on.

By the way, the AWS documentation doesn't do much of a job of teaching you how to use AWS either, but that's another story that a review of this book isn't really the place for. Suffice it to say that if you have just created some servers in AWS, this book isn't going to get you very far in terms of nuts and bolts.

It will explain what most of the possibilities are, and that's helpful enough to get it a second star.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Good reference for newbies in AWS 8. April 2014
Von Israel Romero Rojas - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
I had no previous experience with AWS and the information available on amazon was not easy to follow for me since I didn't had any reference of the different components and their functions and I couldn't find a reference inside AWS documentation that would exemplefy this in general.

This book helped me to understand the big picture of the services available in AWS and the implication of configuration options of the most commonly used services. I'm sure it will be useful as a reference for a little while, which is basically the function of this type of "basic" guides.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Does a good job introducing Amazon Web Services 3. November 2013
Von Stephanie Sullivan - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Vine Kundenrezension eines kostenfreien Produkts (Was ist das?)
I love when I hear people in business say something like "Why don't we just use the cloud?" The proverbial cloud is something widely spoken about yet narrowly understood. Like real world clouds in the sky the scope and boundaries are changing and not so well defined. So a "dummies" book for Amazon's cloud offering is both needed and natural.

Bernard Golden does a very credible job introducing the new user to Amazon Web Services (AWS). Then he goes beyond and discusses the aspects of AWS spending a lot of time on storage options, EC2 computing resources, and then detail on other services like relational database support, networking options, and related application area.

Throughout the book explanations of how things work are presented with examples of pricing and discussions of scenarios that can be helpful at determining if AWS is the right solution for your application. There are also examples of where real-world businesses are making use of AWS either to supplement their infrastructure or provide primary services (like Netflix).

One of the things I found most interesting was the glacier AWS storage option. I'll be looking there to provide economical off-site backup storage for some of my client's.

The presentation does have a what seemed to me to be a few quirky moments. One that comes to mind is the discussion of API's and SOAP vs REST. It seemed too detailed for that point of the discussion, but not detailed enough to be helpful for someone trying to use it. But these seem few and not really significant.

To get someone started with AWS this is a book I will recommend. It appears to fit the apparent target of a "dummies" series book well within its subject area and likely audience. This makes Amazon Web Services for Dummies a 5 star book in my opinion. Well done Bernard Golden.

I found this book as a great starting point for understanding AWS at a technical level. From there a person can focus on the specific services they wish to pursue.

I found this book extremely useful as an intro to AWS and liked the fact that it doesn't just scratch the surface, but actually goes deeper into the technology. I still use it regularly as a reference and it has inspired me to learn more on the subject for my career.
