A remarkable book that touches on many aspects of life in prison. Consists chiefly of a collection of photographs of inmates in front of landscapes, mostly painted by talented prisoners. Also includes correspondence to the author from inmates, many of whom seem happy to be viewed as people beyond the crimes they were convicted of. The author examines these false scenes and shows many in context, typically on a wall in an otherwise stark prison visiting room. Fascinating and valuable for the insight it provides into prison life.
