26. August 2014 All Our Yesterdays
Imprisoned in the heart of a secret military base, Em has nothing except the voice of the boy in the cell next door and the list of instructions she finds taped inside the drain.

Only Em can complete the final instruction. She's tried everything to prevent the creation of a time machine that will tear the world apart. She holds the proof: a list she has never seen before, written in her own hand. Each failed attempt in the past has led her to the same terrible present- imprisoned and tortured by a sadistic man called the doctor while war rages outside.

Marina has loved her best friend, James, since they were children. A gorgeous, introverted science prodigy from one of America's most famous families, James finally seems to be seeing Marina in a new way, too. But on one disastrous night, James's life crumbles apart, and with it, Marina's hopes for their future. Marina will protect James, no matter what. Even if it means opening her eyes to a truth so terrible that she may not survive it . . . at least, not as the girl she once was. Em and Marina are in a race against time only one of them can win.

All Our Yesterdays is a wrenching, brilliantly plotted story of fierce love, unthinkable sacrifice, and the infinite implications of our every choice.

Someone caught in a tiny space, not knowing when or if they will ever be free again. That's the best way to start a story that I want to keep reading. Em our heroine finds herself in such a situation, confined in a cell. There are just so many unknown constantes in this equation, who is keeping her hostage, what did she do to get herself in there and how will she escape? It's the deperate search for a way out that always appeals to me on a very instinctive level. Seeing the main character caught in such a hopeless scenario is an immediate bonding guarantee for me.
In the cell next to hers is a boy who we fast learn stars as leading male character and will make for a gorgeous love interest. With the looming threats of a mad scientist hunting them there isn't much time for romance so I even more savoured each scene piecing together their grand love story. Finn is one love interest who's worth a sleepless night equally spent reading and swooning.
Finn and Em are so good together. They aren't trained agents or spies but they are just as bad-ass and determined. Being given a time frame of only a few days makes solving the puzzle and ending their task so much more urgent and thrilling.

Em has to figure out the list she finds in her cell, written by her future self with some of the hardest decisions that will change her life forever. Destroy the life you know and work against another version of yourselves and friends to save the entire world. Working against your own past self has something very emotional and tricky about it. It's about the person you were and you could become in future if you just tried hard enough to change. Cristin Terrill wrote a story so complex and basically mastermind I'm sure she'll have countless fans by the time her second book comes out.

In "All Our Yesterdays" sind alle Schicksale eng miteinander verwoben.

Kurze Zusammenfassung in meinen Worten:

5.0 von 5 Sternen In love with this book 1. September 2013
Von Melanie - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
'But it's the last line that makes me scramble for the toilet in the corner of my cell.
You have to kill him.'

I guess it's no lie that I am an absolute stingy person when it comes to giving out 5 stars. To me, they are the rarest gems of the pile. Being this, I believe I should be permitted to just throw confetti across the room and say, "READ THIS BOOK AND I WILL LOVE YOU AND YOU WILL LOVE ME! It's a double deal!" So that's what I'll do. With a death threat added to the end, don't forget. But of course, if you cannot resist my awesomeness, read on.

All Our Yesterdays broke me, tore me into shreds. I'm still shocked. I'm still dazed. I'm still mind bended into awkward places. I'm still shipping James and Marina. And I'm still clasping onto Em and Finn's hands, not letting go. All Our Yesterdays burned into my stomach, churned a hole that's still there. Entwined with assassination attacks, politics, romance, strong characters and an enormous amount of imagination, Cristin Terrill debut is not to be missed and will sweep readers off their feet. Miss out on this novel and you will regret it.

A brief summary of this novel is that we have three main characters, who in which create six main characters in all. Don't get it? Good. Otherwise you'll be hunting me down if I explained any further. The book opens up to Em, who's closest neighbour is Finn, fellow imprisoned victim, with desperate searches for escape, Em finds a list. It's full, and all have been crossed out except one. She has told herself to kill her past love. To save the world. To save herself. Utterly suspenseful till the last page, All Our Yesterdays can also hint about another paradoxically ambiguous question, how does each action affect our future? Our tomorrows?

With really only three main characters, Terrill accomplishes well with her limited selection. All I couldn't help but grow to admire. There is Em, who's narration is one of determination, humour and heart. James, reserved and complete nerd. And Finn, oh Finn, sweet, sarcastic and wholly deep. The way these three developed together and unravelled the story was captivating, I could truly feel emotions reflecting off their eyes into mine. So genuine and heart breaking.

All Our Yesterdays may be plot driven, however our subplot unequivocally stands with the friendship and romances illustrated. Craftily and conducted with fantastic dynamics, Terrill clearly knows what she's doing, it's magnificent beyond words. While there is a hint of a love triangle, my usual rush of eye rolls did not appear due to how complex this relationship was and how, at the same time, was just a trio of best friends. While Em, Finn and James may not all get it their way in the end, giggles erupted and tears were shed. The depth of the connections in All Our Yesterdays simply can't be further pressed upon.

In terms of world building and wiring, Terrill has excelled. I didn't feel blind when reading this novel- I could construct the world that Terrill set as a foundation- I could sense the wider image sharper and more concise, the details and information of this This sci-fi, war tainted world wasn't dumped but slowly shredded, so strategically. All Our Yesterdays' writing is something to be commended for. It's heart breaking and confronting. Raw and loving. Terrill's writing is chilling, scaring and completely beautiful.

A well plotted and drawn world with a fantastic handful of characters, All Our Yesterdays overwhelmed me with epicness. The writing was bold and raw, the world was dark and hopeful. For a debut, Cristin Terrill shows an ambitious set of work and I will be sure to read her future novels. And like I said at the beginning, read this!

3.0 von 5 Sternen Time Travel Adventures 17. Oktober 2013
Von Miss Bonnie - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
"Time travel isn't a wonder; it's an abomination."

Em and Finn are the only two that can stop the creation of a time machine; a machine that will destroy the world. They've succeeded in traveling back in time fourteen times but those trips have only resulted in failure. This is their fifteenth trip and Em has finally realized exactly what is required to stop it for good. The note she finds written in her own handwriting tells her: "You have to kill him."

This was a breathless thrill-ride with a few twists I didn't see coming. The alternating points of view between the present-day Em and her past self, Marina, was my favorite part of this novel and I loved being able to see the vast differences between the two and how the harsh realities of the world transformed her and those close to her. The two storylines were slightly hard to follow until they came together in the end but was still a delight.

The characters themselves felt like cardboard cutouts at times and I thought it was a bit far-fetched the things they were capable of (geniuses creating time machines and all that). My main gripe is Em though. She wakes up in a prison and is tortured for information each and every day. She finds the note that she wrote herself the last time she traveled back in time and knows what she has to do to right all the wrongs and to keep her and Finn both from winding back up in a prison cell. She has to kill him. But she wastes several opportunities she had to kill him and I realize that she cares about this person she's supposed to kill but it just seemed reckless. Obviously if she's gone back in time 14 times and hasn't been able to change things any of the other times, she's gotta do what she's gotta do.

The time travel concept was definitely interesting and seemed to be fairly unique however I couldn't help but have issue with a few possible holes in the concept. Foremost is that Em and Finn continued to go back in time yet it never seemed that their actions were having any sort of impact on the past (and at the same time the future). When they kept going back in time trying to correct past wrongs and they failed to succeed they inevitably seemed to go back to the same future as if everything they had done was etch-a-sketched out. That seemed entirely implausible especially considering the note. In each instance that Em went back in time she would write herself an update letting her know what she had planned to do so that she would know what not to do the next time in case she failed. I understand that time travel isn't a concrete science but the concept did provoke a bit of disbelief.

I really loved the idea of the concept but there were a few holes that I couldn't overlook. If you're able to read this without over-analyzing things I can imagine this would be vastly more enjoyable. Setting all issues aside, this was a fun read and was definitely thrilling. I have absolutely no idea how a sequel will work considering how things ended but I'm still interested enough to read and see.

5.0 von 5 Sternen 4.5 Stars! Fabulous Debut Novel! 3. September 2013
Von kindlemom1 (My Guilty Obsession) - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
It is clear from the very beginning that Terrill plans to take us on one heck of a journey, a journey through space and time itself. A journey that will leave your mind reeling and you on the edge of your seat with anticipation.

One so filled with complexities and a very science driven plot constantly tested and redefined that it will leave your head spinning and your heart pounding. As the unthinkable and the unimaginable come together to form one explosive ending.

The fact that this is Terrill's debut novel with leave you speechless and questioning the sincerity of it. I am constantly amazed at the talent that has appeared in the last year with stellar debut novels that leave you wanting more and wondering where the author has been hiding all this time.

While the main character's identities are not hidden so much as they are hinted at, the real twists are in the events that lead up to those characters situations and lives changing as much as they have. To those characters becoming someone totally different than what they were when their story first started.

Terrill's debut novel is one that you don't want to miss. An action packed roller coaster ride that will leave you high from the twists and turns and have your stomach dropping from the downward spiral of emotions. Love, anger, friendship, betrayal and redemption are all apart of Em, Marina, Finn, James and the doctor's lives.

This is one book that you will not want to put down from the very first page and will leave you feeling bereft and at a loss as what to read next.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Mind Blowingly Amazing and Complex Time Travel Story. 10. Mai 2014
Von Marianne Lee (Boricuan Bookworms) - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
I am a Whovian. You can only talk to me for 5 seconds, and you'll realize it right away. When I picked this book up, I immediately knew that this was going to be a great hit. I just didn't realize how much.

The story starts off with Em in prison. What did she do to get there? Is she evil? Does she deserve to be there? We don't know. All we know is that she and Finn (the boy in the cell next door) escape and have to travel through time to stop a man which Em refers to as "the Doctor" (see?! Total Whovian here) from destroying the future. Back to present day. We're introduced to Marina, an insecure girl who's in love with her best friend. She's nothing special, insignificant. What do Em & Marina have in common? They're the same person.

Right from that moment, I was captivated! What hapenned to transform Marina into Em? Why did things escalate to how it is now? Cristin Terrill masterfully wades through the time travel aspect and develops it wonderfully. "Timelines", "Paradoxes", "Fixed Points", that's the stuff I love to read about! And that's exactly what we get. There are a lot of scientific explanations, and yet, they were so easy to grasp. I was never lost in the story. I was like a kid in the candy store, honestly.

Also, I loved seeing how the future and the "present" collided. There was no confusion, no shaky world building, just lots and lots of paradoxes (which again, are masterfully explained). This book is definitely a thrill ride. As I write this review, my heart is still pounding.

You'd think that this book would be complex enough with the time travel alone, but there's also the complicated romance in the way. Em has Finn, the boy who has been by her side through everything, but there's also James, her childhood friend, her best friend, and the guy she was hopelessly in love with when she was Marina. Marina is a huge part of Em's life, so how can she possibly distinguish her love for Finn over her love for James? It was absolutely heartbreaking seeing her struggle.

I think that I liked Em more, because she incorporated both her new, unbreakable self into her old, fragile, hopeful self. It made Em seem more real. I think Marina was ultimately immature because she was so young. At times she was downright annoying, but even at her most annoying, I couldnt help but feel for her.

I wish the world building would have been done a bit better, because I feel like this story was concentrated more on what was hapenning around the characters, but overall I really can't recommend this book enough. If you're looking for a (finally!) well developed time travel story, that makes you swoon, makes you yell, makes your heart race, blurs the line between what's right and wrong, and ultimately just makes you think , then please, pick this book up.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Review for All Our Yesterdays by Cristin Terrill 4. September 2013

All Our Yesterdays by Crisitn Terrill
Publisher: Disney Hyperion
Publication Date: September 3, 2013
Rating: 4 stars
Source: ARC sent by the publisher

Summary (from Goodreads):

"You have to kill him." Imprisoned in the heart of a secret military base, Em has nothing except the voice of the boy in the cell next door and the list of instructions she finds taped inside the drain.

Only Em can complete the final instruction. She's tried everything to prevent the creation of a time machine that will tear the world apart. She holds the proof: a list she has never seen before, written in her own hand. Each failed attempt in the past has led her to the same terrible present--imprisoned and tortured by a sadistic man called the doctor while war rages outside.

Marina has loved her best friend James since the day he moved next door when they were children. A gorgeous, introverted science prodigy from one of America's most famous families, James finally seems to be seeing Marina in a new way, too. But on one disastrous night, James's life crumbles apart, and with it, Marina's hopes for their future. Now someone is trying to kill him. Marina will protect James, no matter what. Even if it means opening her eyes to a truth so terrible that she may not survive it. At least not as the girl she once was.

What I Liked:

WOW! What a book! I can't believe I waited two months to read this one. I got it in May, and decided that September was far away, and that I didn't need to worry about September releases yet. Of course, mid-July, I realized that I had more September releases than I had review spots in September, so I took this one with me on a day job, and read for about two hours.

Let me tell you, this book just flies by! I found myself deeply engrossed, and I read this book in on sitting. It's filled with action, high-speed car chases (sort of), MURDER (imagine Stewie saying that, in that episode when he read The Da Vinci Code), and a sweet romance that you know right from the beginning.

Em and Finn need to go back in the past - their past - and stop James. Currently, they're in a prison. Em has failed thirteen times (it might have been fourteen), and has ended up in this prison all of those times. Every time she fails, she leaves instructions for herself in her cell, in a drain grate. This time, when she finds the instructions, she is convinced that she and Finn will succeed. In this present time (which is technically the future), Finn and Em are totally in love.

So, with the help of a guard they found in the past, Finn and Em go back in time. Finn and James and Marina are best friends in the past. Marina is in love with James. Marina hates Finn, because he's annoying and rubs her the wrong way. James's brother is a congressman. In this present time, Em and Finn have to find a way to kill James. Because James did something awful, and whatever it is (you'll find out), they need to stop it. Or they'll end up in the prison. Again.

I love love LOVE the plot of this book! Between Marina/James/Finn, and their blissful ignorance, and Em/Finn, and their quest to stop James... everything is so insane! If you pick up that one little thing, like I did, JUST by reading the synopsis... then your life (a.k.a reading this book) will be a lot easier. If you don't, then you'll just be surprised at some point. But it's really obvious. Look closely at the synopsis and what it says. And the two different stories/times. And the names.

The romance in this book is so sweet. I love watching Marina do the awkward dance around James. She's so in love with him, but he doesn't see it until he needs her comfort, and she's there. I love Em and Finn even more, because they're so genuine, and a beautiful couple. All the times of traveling back in time... and they keep falling in love with each other. Love it!

Terrill's writing style is AMAZING. It totally contributes to the brilliance that it time travel and the time and space continuum. I usually hate time travel books. But this book seems extremely plausible, because it's very scientific. You all know me and my math/science brain. Terrill really did her research, and her writing is gorgeous.

Read this one ASAP! If the cover didn't convince you, I hope this review does!

What I Did Not Like:

I kind of wish there was a bit more about the ending. It's sort of open-ended, which is okay, with series, but not with standalones. Is this a standalone? I've seen no indication otherwise. I hope there would be an epilogue, or something more, but I suppose not. Is it so bad that I want MORE? :)

Would I Recommend It:

Totally! Even if science fiction is not your thing, I think any reader would enjoy this book. I personally dislike most time-travel books (except the Ruby Red trilogy!), but I loved this book.

4.5 stars -> rounded down to 4 stars, because I wanted more from the ending. BUT, it's a fitting, good ending, that wraps up everything. I just want more
