In 1843, a 16-year-old Canadian housemaid named Grace Marks was tried for the murder of her employer and his mistress. The sensationalistic trial made headlines throughout the world, and the jury delivered a guilty verdict. Yet opinion remained fiercely divided about Marks- -was she a spurned woman who had taken out her rage on two innocent victims, or was she an unwilling victim herself, caught up in a crime she was too young to understand? Such doubts persuaded the judges to commute her sentence to life imprisonment, and Marks spent the next 30 years in an assortment of jails and asylums, where she was often exhibited as a star attraction. In Alias Grace, Margaret Atwood reconstructs Marks's story in fictional form. Her portraits of 19th-century prison and asylum life are chilling in their detail. The author also introduces Dr Simon Jordan, who listens to the prisoner's tale with a mixture of sympathy and disbelief. In his effort to uncover the truth, Jordan uses the tools of the then rudimentary science of psychology. But the last word belongs to the book's narrator--Grace herself.

Grace Marks ist 16 Jahre alt, als sie wegen Mordes an ihrem Arbeitgeber Thomas Kinnear und seiner Geliebten Nancy Montgomery zum Tode verurteilt wird. Im letzten Moment wird ihre Verurteilung in lebenslängliche Haft umgewandelt. Doch ist Grace wirklich schuldig? Genau diese Frage liegt dem Roman Alias Grace zugrunde. Dabei wird das Geschehen aus verschiedenen Perspektiven beleuchtet; durch Briefe des Psychologen Simon, Zeitungsartikel der Journalistin Susanna Moodie und, nicht zuletzt, Graces eigener Schilderung ihres Lebens.
Margaret Atwood gelingt dabei ein sehr vielschichtiges und psychologisches Portrait ihrer Charaktere. Jeder von ihnen ist dabei glaubhaft gezeichnet. Dennoch verrät die Autorin niemals alles über ihre Protagonisten, so dass der Leser sich immer sein eigens Bild machen kann und muss, wodurch das Buch an Spannung und Glaubwürdigkeit gewinnt.
Die Geschichte ist fesselnd geschrieben. Man fiebert mit Grace mit und will unbedingt erfahren wie der Mord an Thomas Kinnear und Nancy Montgomery wirklich abgelaufen ist. Bis zum Schluss bekommt der Leser jedoch keine eindeutige Antwort auf die zentrale Frage nach Graces Schuld oder dem "Wie", das hinter dem Verbrechen steht.
Alias Grace fasziniert in jeder Hinsicht; sowohl die Charaktere, die Geschichte als auch die Sprache, derer sich Margaret Atwood bedient, ziehen den Leser in ihren Bann. Stellenweise hat mich die Geschichte der Grace Marks einwenig an Jane Eyre erinnert, doch natürlich ist hier das Motiv des Verbrechens und der Sexualität sehr stark ausgeprägt. Ein Buch das ich uneingeschränkt empfehlen würde.

It is Canada in 1843 - Queen Victoria reigns; her insurrection prone North American colonists are diverted and then transfixed by a shocking murder trial.
Against this backdrop Margaret Atwood, who gave us The Robber Bride and The Handmaid's Tale, presents her ninth novel. Atwood's virtuosity is at its peak as she traces her feminist thesis in Alias Grace, which is based on the true story of a 16-year-old servant girl accused of double murder. With few facts known, the author has drawn a haunting portrait of what might have been, a profoundly mesmerizing combination of actuality and invention.
Grace Marks and her fellow worker, James McDermott, were tried and convicted for the brutal killing of their employer Thomas Kinnear and his housekeeper Nancy Montgomery. McDermott was hanged at the new gaol in Toronto, November 21, 1843. While Grace, due to her youth and "feminine weakness of mind," was sentenced to life in prison. She was also committed to a lunatic asylum following an emotional breakdown. Throughout both incarcerations Grace maintained that she had no memory of the murders or the victims.
Referring to the scandalous trial in her afterword Atwood writes: "The details were sensational: Grace Marks was uncommonly pretty and also extremely young; Kinnear's housekeeper, Nancy Montgomery, had previously given birth to an illegitimate child and was Thomas Kinnear's mistress; at her autopsy she was found to be pregnant. Grace and her fellow-servant James McDermott had run away to the United States together and were assumed by the press to be lovers. The combination of sex, violence, and the deplorable insubordination of the lower classes was most attractive to the journalists of the day."
Grace's story is revealed through letters, verse, news accounts, but primarily through her voice and that of Dr. Simon Jordan.
An ambitious young doctor with an interest in the field of repressed memory, Jordan is retained by those who believe Grace innocent to help her remember. As Grace's memory is prodded, she weaves her tale. Is Jordan trying to exploit her for professional gain. Or, is it possible that she is manipulating him?
Was Grace a naive pawn or a venomous Circe who bewitched then goaded McDermott into committing this appalling crime? The climax is a stunner!
In the adroit hands of Margaret Atwood, shades of guilt, innocence and complicity as well as the complexities of the human mind continue to fascinate. Alias Grace, a laudatory fictionalization of actual events, is a shivery Victorian tale of obsession and murder.

Alias Grace is a captivating, mystifying, and beautifully written novel about the intriguing life of an accused murderess in nineteenth century Canada. Margaret Atwood's fictional rendition of Grace Marks' true story enables her twentieth century readers to
experience the sort of confusion, wonderment, and suspense that was felt over a century
ago by contemporaries of the celebrated trial. The author's talent for recreating the place
and time period from such a broad range of perspectives is truly remarkable, and will
most definitely be appreciated by those readers with a soft spot for history (such as
myself!). Alias Grace's most obtrusive weakness is its chronic long-windedness, which is
sure to thoroughly annoy readers with an impatient streak. Atwood has a tendency to
spend exorbitant amounts of time on trivial subject matter. Nevertheless, Alias Grace is
certainly a pleasant read and I recommend it most specifially, although not exclusively,
to patient, seasoned readers who truly value a high-caliber prose style -- even if it isn't
accompanied by a scorching, juicy plot.
