This is the (short) story of Ajax Penumbra, the prequel to the 24 h Bookstore and a must read for all those who read Sloan's novel and the adventures of Clay Jannon. In 1969 having finished his studies at university Ajax gets the task to secure a copy of the Techne Tycheon a rare book which his employers want to have for their library. Ajax can trace the book to San Francisco and sets out for the journey west. He comes across a peculiar bookstore, which is open at night and crowded with young folks and hippies, having a good time at the store, even buying and borrowing some books. With the help of the book store personnel Ajax is able to locate the site where he might find the book, but knowing where a treasure rests and retrieving it, is not the same. Read it and you meet some of the characters, which will drive the plot of the 24 h bookstore. The story is a bit short for my taste but still good. What I like most is the book store's bestselling list in the end, which shows that at least in 1969, they were selling some books......

I got this book after a recommendation in a magazine...I just love the style of this writer, it's not formal but like he's actually talking to you. Got hooked from page one and could not wait for any spare minute to open my kindle and continue reading. I read the part in the dark library at night and actually got kind of scared...never really had that with a book. This book has got everything for me, wit, thrill, mystery, magic...something about it that is new. Although I have no deep knowledge about computers and the technical backgrounds I was able to more than enjoy this book. Just bought everything else the author has published and hope it will be written in a similar engageing style.

I loved "Mr. Penumbra's 24-hour Bookstore", so I pre-ordered "Ajay Penumbra" as soon as I finished the other one.
When it was released, I immediately read it, and it was really nice. It was quite short, but easy to read and follow - and much too soon finished ;)
Everyone who liked the first book should definitely read "Ajax Penumbra", too!
For anyone who doesn't know either of the books: Give it a try! It doesn't matter which one you read first, but I am sure you will soon be in love with Sloan's style :)
