From Robin Sloan, author of Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore, the story of Mr. Penumbra’s first trip to San Francisco—and of how he got entangled with the city’s most unusual always-open enterprise…

It is August 1969. The Summer of Love is a fading memory. The streets of San Francisco pulse to the sounds of Led Zeppelin and Marvin Gaye. And of jackhammers: A futuristic pyramid of a skyscraper is rising a few blocks from City Lights bookstore and an unprecedented subway tunnel is being built under the bay. Meanwhile, south of the city, orchards are quickly giving way to a brand-new industry built on silicon.
But young Ajax Penumbra has not arrived in San Francisco looking for free love or a glimpse of the technological future. He is seeking a book—the single surviving copy of the Techne Tycheon, a mysterious volume that has brought and lost great fortune for anyone who has owned it. The last record of the book locates it in the San Francisco of more than a century earlier, and on that scant bit of evidence, Penumbra’s university has dispatched him west to acquire it for their library. After a few weeks of rigorous hunting, Penumbra feels no closer to his goal than when he started. But late one night, after another day of dispiriting dead ends, he stumbles across a 24-hour bookstore, and the possibilities before him expand exponentially . . .

5.0 von 5 Sternen The prequel to the 24 h Bookstore. 6. Oktober 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
This is the (short) story of Ajax Penumbra, the prequel to the 24 h Bookstore and a must read for all those who read Sloan's novel and the adventures of Clay Jannon. In 1969 having finished his studies at university Ajax gets the task to secure a copy of the Techne Tycheon a rare book which his employers want to have for their library. Ajax can trace the book to San Francisco and sets out for the journey west. He comes across a peculiar bookstore, which is open at night and crowded with young folks and hippies, having a good time at the store, even buying and borrowing some books. With the help of the book store personnel Ajax is able to locate the site where he might find the book, but knowing where a treasure rests and retrieving it, is not the same. Read it and you meet some of the characters, which will drive the plot of the 24 h bookstore. The story is a bit short for my taste but still good. What I like most is the book store's bestselling list in the end, which shows that at least in 1969, they were selling some books......

3.0 von 5 Sternen Short and sweet 13. April 2014

and a must read for any fans of 'Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore'.
Of course a shorter tale then the above book and possibly not as 'new/fresh' as the original.
But that might just be because I am a jaded reader :)
and since this is a prequel the surprise and novel aspects of the first tale are not there.
Sheds some light on the 'Penumbra universe'.
Looking forward to reading more from this author.

I loved "Mr. Penumbra's 24-hour Bookstore", so I pre-ordered "Ajay Penumbra" as soon as I finished the other one.
When it was released, I immediately read it, and it was really nice. It was quite short, but easy to read and follow - and much too soon finished ;)
Everyone who liked the first book should definitely read "Ajax Penumbra", too!
For anyone who doesn't know either of the books: Give it a try! It doesn't matter which one you read first, but I am sure you will soon be in love with Sloan's style :)

5.0 von 5 Sternen Just love it! 26. Oktober 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
I got this book after a recommendation in a magazine...I just love the style of this writer, it's not formal but like he's actually talking to you. Got hooked from page one and could not wait for any spare minute to open my kindle and continue reading. I read the part in the dark library at night and actually got kind of scared...never really had that with a book. This book has got everything for me, wit, thrill, mystery, magic...something about it that is new. Although I have no deep knowledge about computers and the technical backgrounds I was able to more than enjoy this book. Just bought everything else the author has published and hope it will be written in a similar engageing style.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Like A San Francisco Earthquake Aftershock. 11. November 2013

O.K. You finished Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore: A Novel and you loved it or admired it or were impressed by it or just got a kick out of it. It was, in any event, so well written that you immediately checked to see if there was anything else out there by Robin Sloane. There was Annabel Scheme, which was well enough reviewed but not anything like "Penumbra". And then this nice short Kindle Single popped up just when you were resigned to waiting for Mr. Sloane's next novel. Oh, boy.

Well, I found this short story very satisfying. Ajax Penumbra is a fine character and it is a pleasure to have him drawn from the novel's shadows and set right on center stage. This version of San Francisco is as moody, vital and strange as the later version that serves as the novel's backdrop. The writing is a bit less flashy, but its calm restraint and attention to delicate detail is welcome. If anything, it may benefit from not having to carry the burden of a novel's full scale plot, with its loose ends and sometimes strained resolutions.

So, a very nice stand alone if you want to sample Mr. Sloan and a very satisfying companion to "Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore". I could get to like this Kindle Single phenomenon.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Great short story 25. September 2013

In Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore, Ajax Penumbra himself proves a curious, enigmatic character. This short story gives us a glimpses into the man as a recent college graduate, and what led him to become the owner of his curious bookstore.
I've long been interested in geographical history--a history of not just events, but of place. In this story I got to go on a brief but fascinating journey through part of the history of San Francisco. I greatly enjoyed the trip, and the plot surrounding the characters, the place, and the history.

In disclosure: I won a free Kindle copy of this story through Mr. Sloan's email list.

I am in love with this book that tells this precious truth. Many of the same droll characters people this world. Can there be any magic like sharing of minds that occurs when we read. You have to embrace this gangly boy, young Ajax Penumbra who was raised getting presents of books on their authors' birthday. He comes to San Francisco to find "Technetium Tycheon" in 1969 with only a vague notion of shaggy youths playing music he has heard before who have come to find a world he has not sought. Add in his brilliantly matched computer outlier of the early days, and this book draws you deep into the world of knowledge learning. This is just a very wonderful book.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Great Companion Piece 1. Oktober 2013
Von R. R. Moushon - Veröffentlicht auf
Robin Sloan's hit Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore: A Novel was a brilliant exercise in foregoing conventional templates and telling a modern mystery blending new, old, and bizarre tech in a beach-read mystery.

With Ajax Penumbra 1969 (Kindle Single), Sloan provides the origin story of the titular character, set against San Francisco in the 60s. This story moves quick with the same delicate description, nerdy wit, intrigue, and page-swiping addictiveness found here as in the original.

Easily one of the best "Kindle Single" reads I've downloaded. Well worth the time and cost as a companion piece.

I just finished the Kindle single of Ajax Penumbra 1969, and it was wonderful to get to spend more time with Ajax and the bookstore. I really enjoyed the wide eyed young Ajax, and the feeling of San Francisco in 1969. The sweetness of the original novel continues in this prequel, and I would have loved to read another 300 pages in Robin Sloan's universe.
