From Library Journal

Howe (Ruskin Coll., Oxford Univ.) sees "Afrocentrism" as "Ethnonationalism" and as a concept that "is accompanied by a mass of invented traditions, by a mythical vision of the past, and by a body of racial pseudoscience." Here he offers a provocative and critical analysis of the philosophical and historicist validity of Afrocentrism. Howe critically analyzes, and in some cases debunks, notions of prominent Africanists such as Marcus Garvey and Frantz Fanon, providing a useful overview of some of the ideological differences between African American scholars in their debates on multiculturalism vs. Afrocentricity. Unfortunately, he fails to realize that, however flawed, Afrocentrism is the newest concept emphasizing the social cohesion of African-origin people rather than the American individualism of the older Anglo conformity. Overall, Howe's book is an effective polemic that will appeal to scholars and students alike working on developing critical interpretations and/or a historical understanding of Afrocentrism, and he is to be commended for providing scholars with easier access to source materials and for his extensive bibliography and footnotes. Recommended for special collections.AEdward G. McCormack, Univ. of Southern Mississippi, Gulf Coast

Inadequate. 30. September 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
The subject of Afrocentrism needs to be addressed thoroughly and comprehensively in a book written with the focus on the laymen who will read it rather than on academics. This was not that book. It covered a lot of ground, and that is probably it's problem. Rather than tackle the particular assertions of Afrocentrism -- such as whether or not Western Civilization is "stolen" Egyptian civilization, or whether or not the Egyptians were black, the author addressed the origins of Afrocentric ideas, the various works, presursors to the works, background information and so forth and precious little attention to addressing the truthfulness, or lack thereof, of Afrocentric ideology. It is also not very readable. Mary Lefkowitz' "Not Out of Africa" is much more direct and much more readable, but neither book in itself addresses Afrocentrism as thoroughly as it should be dealt with.

A superb book. Anyone who still believes in the comedy-scholarship of Afrocentrism after reading this is either nuts, wilfully blind or believes that Africans discovered America. A clear debunking and humiliation of the Afrocentrics and their pseudo-nonsense by a disinterested and knowledgeable academic.

telling half the story 16. Juli 2000
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
When Mr. Howe in his book accuses other attackers of Afrocentrism of reading little or no Afrocentric literature, this is giving the impression HE is well read in this area. But this seems doubful. For instance, if he REALLY did read Dr. W.E.B DuBois he would have seen that Dr. DuBois saw the ancient Egyptains as black and coming from the south. If he had REALLY read William Ferris he would have seen that it was on more than one point that Ferris disagreed with DuBois - it was ten infact, just read his writings. And Ferris might have "admired" DuBois as Mr. Howe rightfully observes but he also held Marcus Garvey in very high esteem - this is only obvious if you actually READ his writings. And Sinse Mr. Howe insists on labeling Afrocentrism as "ideological" as opposed to more "universal" philosophies as Marxism and The Enlightment, it is obvious that he has not read Emmanual Eze's book RACE AND THE ENLIGHTMENT. Any reading of Dr. Ivan Van Sertima one could see that he is not belittling the Native Americans.

Thus Mr.Howe is just as polemical as the Afocentrists he so quotes with abhorrence.
