According to Julian Bond's foreword, this is probably the largest collection of African American quotations printed. The 2,506 quotations are grouped into broad subject areas and are made accessible by three indexes--name, subject (including see and see also references), and occupation (of persons quoted)--and by the table of contents (main subject headings). The quotes are numbered, and the person's dates and occupation follow each quote.
The more than 500 individuals quoted include the famous, the infamous, and the obscure. With a few exceptions, they are African Americans. The quotations range from one-liners to short paragraphs and run the gamut from bitterness to joy. W. E. B. Du Bois, Martin Luther King Jr., and Malcolm X are among those represented most often, but there are also plenty of quotes from contemporary figures such as Tupac Shakur, Cornel West, and Oprah Winfrey. One could quibble with the inclusion of the likes of Pliny the Elder and Shakespeare in light of the title; however, their quotes on Africa are useful.
To quote George C. Wolfe: "We traded in our drums for respectability, so now it's just words." There are plenty of words to use in this attractive volume, which is a fine addition to any collection of quotations. Though not as broad in scope as Dorothy Winbush Riley's My Soul Looks Back, `Less I Forget: A Collection of Quotations by People of Color [RBB N 15 93], which has more than 7,000 quotations, Newman's concentration on African Americans is useful. Series Detective Chief Inspector Webb matches wits and crime theories with amateur criminologist Fred Mace. This British cozy focuses on what appears to be a copycat of a murder that originally took place six years ago in Webb's hometown. Mace's theory is that crimes are the result of someone breaking one of the Ten Commandments, and he works at solving the mystery from that perspective. Fraser deftly intertwines Mace's amateur detecting with that of Webb's staff, dropping red herrings into a somewhat contrived tale. David Graham's narration adds color to the distinctly British cast. By Far on the Lower End of The Spectrum for African American Quote Books

African American Quotation books are great tools-- mostly for their inspiration and for the broad range of subject matter and wisdom. This one is at the lower end of the spectrum for a number of reasons. There is more than a fair amount of hate in these quotes, particularly due to the mind-numbing over-abundance of quotes by Louis Farankaht. (Why?) Many of the quotes aren't by African Americans at all (Naomi Campbell, for example, is a favorite here). And the choice of Campbell's quotes are strange, particularly where they include a quote of her saying how she wants to be remembered not as a model but for the good she's done as a person (poor choice, considering that she's mostly known as a person for breaking the law and beating up underlings). The book is also poorly structured, and generally lacking. There are only a small amount of subjects covered, lacking in subjects outside of specifically racial issues.
