I just got this book today and already i have read over the whole thing twice and started at the beginning and worked my way through the first several concepts. This book is truly a revelation. It attacks all the most common 'holes' in any guitarist's playing. Furthermore, it explains why these 'holes' exist. It is NOT a method book... it leads the musician to develop his or her own methods, which is a more complete way of learning. The tone is friendly, wise, and conversational throughout... in a word, encouraging and inviting. Mick doesn't spoon feed you, he makes you WANT to discover it for yourself. The lion's share of the book is devoted to valuable theoretical and technical concepts, but is laced with humor and more abstract concepts throughout. Finally, there is a section entitled "short subjects" with little mick goodrick one-liners that i think is one of the most valuable parts of the book. Mick Goodrick is as heavy of a philosopher as he is a guitarist! Much of this section of the book is valuable for anyone, musicians and non-musicians alike, and the quotes are particularly helpful for helping you maintain the right attitude. I can't think of anything I would change about this book, or any musician I wouldn't recommend it to. It offers so much insight into so many things! Mick Goodrick is a sage and a master musician! two thumbs and two big toes up.

This is more of a casebook where you can read it backwards or forwards. The material is always relevant, deep and laced with humor. It doesn't treat you like an idiot and rewards you tenfold for the effort you put in. I'm a bassist, but find the comments, exercises and suggestions all relevent for improving your communication through Music, not just on the guitar either.

This is probably the greatest guitar instructonal ever. What is the most amazing thing about this book, is that you can apply it to your playing no matter what level you are. I have owned this book for nigh on 6 years, and everytime I go back to it I learn a little more. It's written so well, and is so accesible, that you get out of it what you can, every time you look at it you might learn or realize something different. I have only heard Mick Goodrick play twice, but through thtis book, he has been one of the major influences on my playing. I recommend this book to anyone who truly wants to understand music on the guitar.

goodrick - the advancing guitarist
