Assigned to review 90,000 pages of Acrobat document in connection with a lawsuit, I was particularly interested in Acrobat's Search feature. Given the size of the project, I bought three books, seeking to familiarize myself with Acrobat's search capabilities:
1. [How to Do Everything Adobe Acrobat X
2. Adobe Acrobat X Classroom in a Book; and
3. This book, Adobe Acrobat X PDF Bible.
The first book proved to have virtually nothing on the Search feature. After looking through it, it appeared to me to be generally useless.
The second book provided a nice overview of Acrobat X, including the Search feature. It is clearly written and would appear to be the best choice for the average user.
The third book suffers from organizational problems, but it has a good index and I was ultimarely able to answer all my questions, albeit slowly. It is the book of choice for power users who anticipate calling on all of Acrobat's many features.

I buy dozens of books from Amazon every year, many of which are technical books. Most of the time my expectations are met. I was eager to get the 'Bible' on Acrobat X because I wanted an in-depth and under-the-hood investigation of PDF. Instead I found the book nearly useless. Much of the material on converting documents to PDF and editing PDF documents can be found in help menus or simple google searches. The cover of this book states, 'The book you need to succeed'. My experience tells me you can easily succeed without this book.

I work in the disability/IT field known as Section 508 compliancy and I bought this manual (out of my own pocket) as my Federal Agency was transitioning from Acrobat 9 to X and I had to learn the new software in order to teach everyone else. Unfortunately there are only about 35 pages on ensuring the accessibiility of your PDF documents, and these steps are not worked into the "normal" instructions so that users are shown how to produce accessible documents as an everyday affair (aka universal design). I am really disappointed that Adobe didn't take advantage of the advanced 508 tools in Acrobat X by highlighting them throughout this manual and going into more detail in the one chapter that does cover accessibility. Accessibility should be part of a universal document design concept.
It would also help if Acrobat and Microsoft would work together so it is easier to take a MS Word 2007 or 2010 doc and transition it into an acessible PDF. BTW folks you need Acrobat Professional X (full) in order to work MS Word 2010 into true accessible and 508 compliant docs. Version 9 doesn't do it.
