I loved this book (or compilation.) I purchased it a few years back at an airport newsstand, looking for a little easy reading. Short of one ar two other SF novels, I can say I have never read a better story. Mr. Vinge has invented a heck of an idea in his "bobble" In fact I spent many a moment thinking how the world would be a different place if such an item existed. I believe the caliber of a novel can be determined by how much time you spend thinking about it.....this book does just that. In fact both of Vernor Vinge's new novels are quite excellent as well and I can't tell you how excited I was to see them sitting on the shelf at my local bookstore.

Stasis fields are common in SF, VV has used them extensively in "a fire upon the deep" and "a deepnes in the sky" to enable spacetravel without FTL. What happens if this fields can be used to enclose anything for as long as one wishes? Totaly different ways to live, fight, love and think. In the course of the two parts of this compilation he explores the beginning and the ultimate outcome of this impressive technology. What he makes the charackters to live through is a brand new experience for the reader and a thrilling one as well. Big issues, political order, religion, history, war, love, compassion and a wonderfull end, all in a few pages. It feels like a few, that is, the pages turn that fast.

On the bad side. As in all his books, it's allways a super-charackter who fight things allone from a solitary virtual high tower. Hacking systems, directing the whole show, responsible for everything. The charackters are thin and not very flexible. But enought and not too much of them. The crime-story story to tell the history of a culture was well developed from Hamilton "watching tress grow" as well. I liked the motion with both. Both came out in 2000, so just a coincidence.

Looking past the topmost layer, not much to find there. No Gibson, but still a master of the genre. And the inventor of cyberspace in "True Names".

If unsure, go read the collected short stories, you'll come back for more.

of the books "The Peace War" and "Marooned in Real Time". Like "A Fire upon the Deep" and "A Deepness in the Sky", these two SF novels play in very different times (near and very far future) and are only loosely linked through a common universe, technology, and several characters. Albeit very different, both novels are real page-turners and outstanding in terms of imagination, credible characters, and good writing.
