Juli 2013

*Rating* 3.0-3.5

*Thoughts*

Awaken closes out the Abandon Trilogy in a nice tidy little bow without too many questions left to be answered. In fairness, however, there is (1) important question that I really would like answers to and I'm hoping that Ms Cabot finds a way to answer mine and Pierce's question: Why does Pierce's necklace turn purple whenever she's around Kayla?

I'm pretty sure others haven't mentioned this little tidbit, but, this happens when I take copious notes and actually pay attention while reading and not just charge ahead like a rhino in a grocery story. Will we see another novella in the future that will explain this? Guess we shall have to wait and find out. In the meantime....

If you plan on reading the Abandon Trilogy in the future, my suggestion is that you start with Abandon, slide directly into Underworld, and then top it off with Awaken since the entire Trilogy is one huge continuous plot line without any sort of major interruptions. Yes, there are a few additional new characters added to Awaken, and they each play important roles in the continued smooth flow of the Underworld as well as add another layer to the story itself.

The opening of Awaken puts the Kibosh on Pierce's and John's mini skirmish that ended Underworld. In Awaken, Pierce is busy trying to save John from a permanent death, save the Underworld from the Furies who are causing major chaos, save her cousin Alex who was brought back from the dead by John, and her friend Kayla who got dragged into the Underworld to save her life, while trying to right a balance in the Underworld that was set adrift at sea by John's actions in saving Alex. On top of all this, she finally realizes that her angst ridden fight with John was a whole lot of nothing that could have been fixed by talking things over and saying three little words.

You are asking yourself, yes, but what about Pierce as a character and what about her growth? Pierce has definitely come a long way from the first book when it seems that the whole world was out to get her which wasn't far from the truth. She understands now that if she wants a commitment with John that she has to give up certain things while remaining in the Underworld as its Queen. She is definitely more of a take charge character than the previous books and makes some interesting choices and decisions along the way. She learns how to use a whip and her necklace against the Furies, including her Grandmother, who are relentless in their pursuit of what they call abominations.

There are some abstract story-lines added as well as an expected, I think, ending to the trilogy itself. There is the arrival, briefly, of Thanatos the death deity who I thought would have made a brilliant member of Pierce's team against the Furies or at least an antagonist that she would have to deal with more than just once. There's the fact that Pierce's parents are actually together in this story which I found pleasantly surprising as well as a sort of comic relief. Then there is the relationship between Pierce and John and what readers can guess will happen to them in the future.

In all, Awaken was pretty much what I expected from a Cabot written book. The story was fast pace. The plot lines were wrapped up quite nicely, and above all, there was no freaking 3 way love triangles which I want to send a personal note of congratulations to Ms Cabot herself!

1.0 von 5 Sternen Really? 21. August 2013
Von Currer - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
Normally, I am a huge fan of Meg Cabot's books. Her clever, yet spunky, writing is normally laced with a deeper kind of substance and character growth. However, this book/series is definitely a devoid of all substance. I read the whole series in a matter of days and stuck with it hoping that it's conclusion might redeem itself. I found the whole series shallow and unrealistic. The whole series takes place in a matter of days and Pierce falls in love in that time and commits to being the queen of the underworld. Not only this, but when she is found in bed with John by her parents their reaction is hardly realistic when they only freak out for a matter of minutes then invite John down to breakfast... I thought that was devoid of all class. The plot with Thantos might have been OK had it been hinted at or weaved into the storyline in the other books, rather than thrown in at the very end of the second book. That made it seem like it was just thrown in a the end to give the book a twist and conclusion. I also never got a sense of who these characters were, it was a mere snip-it of their thoughts rather than an exploration of a characters whole psyche and emotions. Over all, it turned out to be no more than one of the many superficial supernatural books that are sucking the intelligence out of our generation.

Awaken by Meg Cabot
Book Three of the Abandon trilogy

Summary (from Goodreads):

Death has her in his clutches. She doesn't want him to let go.

Seventeen-year-old Pierce Oliviera knew by accepting the love of John Hayden, she'd be forced to live forever in the one place she's always dreaded most: the Underworld. The sacrifice seemed worth it, though, because it meant she could be with the boy she loves.

But now her happiness -- and safety -- are threatened, all because the Furies have discovered that John has broken one of their strictest rules: He revived a human soul.

If the balance between life and death isn't fixed, both the Underworld and Pierce's home back on earth will be wiped away. But there's only one way to restore order. Someone has to die.

What I Liked:

Oh, readers! You have no idea how happy I am that I enjoyed this book! I sort of liked the first book, Abandon (3 stars), but really did not like the second book, Underworld (2 stars). So, I was a bit undecided as to whether or not I really wanted to read Awaken, because after Underworld, I was NOT happy. However, I am so glad I saw this book on NetGalley and decided to download it. In my opinion, this book is a vast improvement in comparison to the other two books of the series.

For one, I liked Pierce a lot more than I did in Underworld. I didn't have much of a problem with her in Abandon. But in Underworld, I found her whiny and controlling and manipulative. She basically forced John to string her along, or to do things he didn't want to do (like at the end, with Alex). In Awaken, John isn't present for about the first 30% of the novel. So Pierce can't be as manipulative.

In fact, while John isn't there, Pierce takes charge. She doesn't sit around and wait for him (like he told her). She is dead set on saving the Underworld, saving Isla Huesos, and getting John. While I often found her stubborn attitude annoying in the previous books, I thought that in this book, she seemed more focused, and more sure of herself.

So basically, John revived a human soul, and everything is imbalanced. John disappears, leaving Pierce to deal with the mess down in the Underworld, and at Isla Huesos. Pierce goes back to Isla Huesos (in the beginning of Awaken, she's in the Underworld), and with the help of friends, attempts to save the world.

The plot of this book is AMAZING. I feel like more occurs in this book than the other two books combined. The first book deals more with discovering John and Pierce's past before they meet at Isla Huesos. The second book... I don't even know what the second book was. This book had action happening left and right. And good, interesting, fun action! My favorite scene was definitely the one at Luke's party. A certain someone comes back in that scene.

The romance in this book is fantastic! I thought that the romance in the entire series is great - which is one of the reasons why I continued the series until the end. There is no love triangle - it's just John and Pierce. Also, their relationship is heartwarming. In Abandon, they find each other. In Underworld, they take their relationship to the next level. In Awaken, they fight for themselves and their relationship, and I'm perfectly convinced that they love each other. And Cabot does not disappoint with the steamy scenes, for anyone who was wondering. Anyway, I'm so happy with the romance in this series!

The ending is kick-butt awesome. I am so happy with the way things end. Everything is wrapped up - but whether in a pretty box or not, I'll let you find out. Some things I never saw coming, and other things, I knew would happen. But all in all, Cabot definitely delivers with this book, something that I waited the entire series to see. I'm glad I stuck with this series!

What I Did Not Like:

I found the beginning of the book extremely slow. By beginning, I mean the first 10% (or thereabout). Basically, it's Pierce giving water to the dead souls waiting for the boat to take them to their destination. She talks to these three people the entire time, and it's really boring. What kicks the book into gear is John disappearing. Everything before that is kind of yawn.

And then when Pierce decides that she has to go back to Isla Huesos to fix everything - that entire scene was long and drawn out. I was reading that and wondering, is she ever going to actually leave the Underworld? Cabot could have shortened that by a lot.

Other than that, I think this book was pretty great! I'm happy with the end of this series.

Would I Recommend It:

I would! If you have read the first two books, or just the first one, I would highly encourage you to read the entire series! And if you were wondering about this series, I think you should read the books! The third one is the best and my favorite, so that's something to look forward to reading. And now the entire series is out! So you can read all three without waiting.

Rating:

4 stars. You know that sad feeling you get when a series ends? Well, I didn't get that feeling when I finished this book. The ending just felt so perfect and so right and I very happy with this book and the series.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Expected More 13. Juli 2013

I have to say that I was expecting more. I was annoyed that the author continued to reiterate facts about the characters and story part that I already know. I read the first two books, get on with the story. That took over like 30% of the book. And then the final show down was somewhat okay as far as the action goes. I wanted to read the book because I already read the first two, but I was a little disappointed by how the ending played out. If you already started the series then I would read this one to find out the end.
