Kurzbeschreibung

Mid-winter in Upstate New York . . . the usual cold and mounds of snow at Tennyson College, but now over-shadowed by the unexpected death of an in-your-face professor of religious studies who insists that humans created God. The small-town police detective thinks it's murder, and his prime suspect is Henry Carey, a political science professor at the college. Henry's world suddenly careens from class-rooms discussion of George Bush's recent election to frantic efforts to conjure up explanations for how Stanley Hoard came to die. Explanations that make someone else the murderer. Henry is good at hypothesizing, but the detective seems to make a fetish out of hard evidence. Henry's wife Gerri tires to keep Henry grounded in reality. To make him understand that nominating others for police scrutiny is sure to alienate the innocent and compel the guilty to strike back. But she, too, becomes caught up in his mania--to the peril of both.

MUST READ!!! 2. Dezember 2011
Von Abby990 - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Set in a pituresque upstate NY winter, a small town college professor's reasoning ability is put to the test. Can he formulate the correct hypothesis to evade the charge of murder?
"A Lecture to Die For" is a gem--filled with interesting characters, a facinating plot, and plenty of conundrums to puzzle long after the book has been read. Henry Carey, the thoughful professor, stuggles with the possiblity that academic principles may not apply to a real life situation. Fortunately, his persistance seems to pay off, but in the end, is this enough?
Get a cup of cocoa and a blanket, and snuggle in for winter's night read.
Enjoy!

Couldn't put it down! 23. Oktober 2011

My review as a story:
By his measured breathing and intermittent soft snoring, she knew he was asleep. She rolled over slowly from the mattress, dropping as lightly as she could to the carpeted floor, silently clasping the book as she crawled into the bathroom. Closing the door quietly and turning on the light, she settled in, bracing her back against the shower door and nestling her bare feet into the soft and warm rug.

Finally! She had started reading the book that morning, innocently thinking she could get in a few pages and begin reading it while her husband and houseguest slept. But she found the book strangely addictive, and was compelled to read it while her husband and guest read the paper, showered, and talked over coffee in the kitchen. And, she furtively read it any time she wasn't busy entertaining. When her husband took their guest into town, she curled up and read. When they returned only 14 pages from the end, she politely sat and chatted until, now, when all were asleep and she could read without appearing rude.

Her hands gripped the pages, she wanted to get to the end, yet didn't want it to end. She was enjoying the cleverly convoluted plot, the suspenseful possibilities, the questions swirling and begging for answers...then, the last few climactic pages, thoughts charging ahead faster...and then, an ending she definitely hadn't expected, a swift catching of breath, a sigh, her hands closing the book but her mind still seeing the carefully wrought images, trying to absorb all the implications, and finally, a wry smile realizing....Wow, what a good mystery embedded in a wonderful novel!
A Unique Puzzler 16. Januar 2012

Like most mysteries, "A Lecture to Die For" will keep you guessing until the end. But, unlike many of this genre, this book encourages you to take an active role in joining the very appealing hero--who is also a suspect--in thinking through "who did it." As one of the other reviewers commented, you will not sleep well until you and Professor Henry Carey (and his charming wife, Gerri) have carefully thought through all the possibilities and have successfully solved this academic puzzler.

You will not regret your sleepless night(s), however, as you will have a most entertaining time vicariously attending college classes, meandering in this picturesque upstate New York college town, and applying the Socratic method to solving a murder mystery. I highly recommend P.R. Beckman's well-written, suspenseful, and engaging novel.
