A Good Idea by KM Mahoney

Take two men who think the best years of their lives are behind them. Throw in one raging attraction, and stir liberally. Giving in to a mutual case of lust could be the best idea either one ever had.

Daniel Haversohn is stuck in a rut, and he knows it. The kids are grown and gone, he’s years past being ‘over the hill’, and the only excitement he gets these days comes from the occasional argument with a supplier. Owning a bar keeps him busy enough, but each night he has to go home to a cold and lonely house. Enter Joe Masterson.

Joe has known Daniel for longer than he cares to remember, but the military was his life. Now, after twenty-five years of active service, he’s a free man again. And he hates it. When Joe goes to his favourite bar to drown his sorrows, Daniel sees him moping and offers him a job. Tending bar is definitely a downward career move, but Joe is just bored enough to take it. The problem? Leaving the army behind must have knocked something loose in his libido, because he can’t stop staring at his boss’ arse. Now Joe has to decide if he can throw aside a lifetime of training for one moment of passion. And, just maybe, something deeper.

About the Author:

Born and raised in the middle of the Midwest, I have always been a dreamer. More often than not I could be found with my nose buried in a book (many of which I had to sneak past my parents). It wasn't long before I started trying my hand at writing more of the stories I loved. After years of penning tales that rarely left the hard drive of my computer, I discovered M/M romance. As with all genres, it wasn't long before my own characters started to take shape.

There is little I love more than wandering new places and, on occasion, entirely new worlds with my characters. They can range from cowboys to Victorian noblemen, accountants to shapeshifters, and everything in between. I write mainly m/m romance, usually with paranormal or fantasy elements. I willingly follow my characters wherever they decide to go, sometimes with unusual results. I have little control over their actions ? any naughty behaviour is all their doing!

Just when you think your best is behind you, life throws you a curveball you can’t help but swing at. Take it from Daniel Haversohn. Feeling like an empty nester with all his kids gone off to college, what’s he got to look forward to other than his bar? Cue Joe Masterson.

Daniel has raised his kids and sent them off into the world, leaving himself alone and wondering what he can do to fill his time. Spending more and more of his days at his bar, he’s falling into a predictable pattern he’d give anything to break out of. All he needs is a little excitement and he’d be good to go, I think. I really liked Daniel. He was fatherly but not overly so. Took in those who needed some guidance or a job and steered them into the right direction. He’s the kind of guy your best friend has for a dad and you immediately like on meeting. It made him the perfect guy for Joe, who needed a little patience and guidance.

Joe, on the other hand, is a career military man who doesn’t know what to do without the service. That he even takes the job Daniel offers him makes me want to really like him because, to me, it shows he’s willing to do whatever he can in order to try and reestablish a new life after the military. His friendship with Daniel only makes their coming together later that much sweeter. I loved that this relationship began with an established friendship, one that was based on trust and mutual respect. Joe is adorable in his resistance of Daniel’s natural charms. That neither of these two were perfect only made this short story more enjoyable.

A Good Idea really is a good idea. A very cute and sexy story about two older men trying to find their feet in the dating world. Their clumsiness and reluctance to actively engage the other is charming and a lot of fun. One drawback is that there could have been more back story between the two. We’re told they’re old friends but not much more. Aside from that, the fact that they have sex that is even more awkward than they are really made this sweet novel so much more relatable in the end. Entertaining characters and a lot of less than perfect relationship building make this a worthwhile read.

Mostly OK, except for a few BE terms which are out of place. Decent character development for a story as short as this one.
