5.0 von 5 Sternen An excellent novel of suspense 19. Januar 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Taschenbuch
After finishing the incredibly stale LET ME CALL YOU SWEETHEART, I was about ready to give up on Mary Higgins Clark. If you're someone who, like me, was beginning to wonder what all the Clark hoopla was about, run out quick and get a copy of A CRY IN THE NIGHT, which can be described as a sort of modern cross between PSYCHO and REBECCA. This is a very well-done book, and it succeeds on many levels.
Jenny MacPartland is a divorced mother of two who is swept off her feet by Erich Krueger, a kind, handsome artist who marries her and takes her back to his sprawling farm in Minnesota. Not long after she arrives, she begins to sense tension in the air. Erich begins to behave strangely. Her ex-husband, Kevin, comes down to visit her, stirring up trouble. The whole place is overshadowed by the strange presence of Caroline, Erich's long-dead mother, to whom Jenny bears a striking resemblance. Soon Jenny begins to have dizzy spells and wonders if she is sleepwalking during the night. What began as a dream for both the protagonist and the reader has transformed into a horrific nightmare.
Clark handles this transformation with considerable deftness, demonstrating her masterful control of pace and characterization. The plot is especially convoluted and intricate; in fact, there are as many surprising twists as there are pages. Unlike LET ME CALL YOU SWEETHEART and WHERE ARE THE CHILDREN?, in which the terror kicks in only in the last few chapters or so, A CRY IN THE NIGHT turns on the suspense less than halfway through the novel and never lets up the pressure. This is an unusually chilling book, but aside from all the suspenseful pleasures of the story, it is also a very sad and emotionally involving drama. There is no pat resolution or happy ending here, but the denouement, if bittersweet, is wholly satisfying. This reader is, I'm happy to report, an officially converted Clark fan.

3.0 von 5 Sternen IT WAS OKAY...I EXPECTED A LITTLE MORE 28. Juli 2000

THIS IS THE FIRST BOOK I READ BY MARY HIGGINS CLARK. THE TITLE AND THE COVER REALLY CAUGHT MY EYE. IT HAD PLENTY OF SUSPENSE AND REALLY ENTERED THE WORLD OF PYCHOPATHS. IT WAS A LITTLE UNREALISTIC ALSO. I FIND IT VERY TO BELIEVE THAT A WOMAN WOULD ALLOW HER HUSBAND TO COMPLETELY ISOLATE FROM THE OUTSIDE WORLD, RICH OR NOT. I HAVEN'T GIVEN UP ON MS. CLARK. I WILL TRY ANOTHER BOOK. FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND, SHE AN EXCELLENT AUTHOR.

Dont start to read this book when you have to get up early next morning. It is thrillling, it keeps you from the first to the last page reading with your heart starting to beat faster and faster. Anyhow that's what happened when I read it, I enjoyed a few other Higgins Clark crime stories but this is definetly her best. I liked the comparison one other reviewer made between Psycho and Rebecca. Especially to Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier which is another truely outstanding book. A cry in the night is a novel about a modern woman who has not given up her dreams despite the pressures of everyday life with two children and an exhusband who doesnt pay her money. But then comes Mr. Right and Rich and she just falls for him, who wouldn't? Him being an artist too and reading every wish from her eyes before she even thinks it. But, then, married and transfered to his deepest Minnesota, things change rapidly, accidents happen and she starts to question her sanity. A new baby is born and lost quickly, she is devastated. More and more it turns out that there is someone in her direct neighbourhood who is doing all that to her or is at least connected to all what is happening. But only, when her now not longer so wonderful husband kidnaps her children whom he has adopted and considers as his own now, things change and she solves the problems surrounding her with surprisingly strong efforts. Anyway, the only thing I could critic in this book was that from the start the reader knew, that the famous artist Erich was not the real painter of the well received paintings. But anyway, A Cry in the Night is really a book to recommend to all other readers.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Sometimes Good, Sometimes Bothersome 7. Januar 2000
Format:Taschenbuch
Ms. Clark always likes to tease. And the opening teaser in this one really entices. She introduces her central character, Jenny, to us in New York. She is a single-mother of two trying to keep the good struggle, until she is swept away by a wealthy artist to his Minnesota home in the cold, rural countryside. Here we meet an assorted cast of characters that live near or help run the artist's farm. Soon strange and distrurbing elements are noticed by young Jenny. The book is a fun read for a late-night escape. But Clark's hold-your-hand approach of telling what Jenny thinks and interprets in the story is bothersome. She sometimes doesn't let the reader read between the lines and tells you outright. Also the character of Jenny seems a bit flawed. Most of the story she seems helpless as a lamb, yet some how had the know-how to raise two children before by herself and walk and talk in the art world. Jenny becomes a little tiresome. The book is also more of a read in freaky behavior, rather than a mystery. Still, it's an entertaining read and the queer things that occur will keep you turning the pages. One memorable scene involves a prank call in the middle of the night from a shrill-voiced, horrific unknown. The climax is visually stunning and creative. One you'll remember later.
