Welcome. I've been working on this book for four decades. I don't mean that I started writing these essays with this book in mind. I mean that I have been learning the lessons I share in this book for 40 years. It took me a long time, a bunch of mistakes and tons of failed starts and stops to get to the point where I finally feel like a successful photographer. My simple goal in gathering these essays is to give you a chance to learn from my mistakes; to encourage you; and to let you know it is possible to follow your dreams and find the success you are looking for.
What this book won't do for you is tell you which camera, lens or tripod to buy. It won't teach you which shutter speed, ISO or aperture to use. What it will do is help you with the hard part of photography. It helps you work out the thoughtful side of the art form.
I have been and am honored to have great friends and compatriots in photography support me in my photographic endeavors. I want to give some of that back to you.
So please try to read these essays with an open mind and an open heart. I hope they help you soar. Remember, you have to take the first step.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Essays? 26. Mai 2014
Von K. Tanaka - Veröffentlicht auf

If you're expecting a collection of brilliantly inspiring and provocative essays on photography, such as you've come to expect from Vicki Goldberg or Tod Papageorge, you'll be badly disappointed. This material is aimed at amateur photography enthusiasts particularly those familiar with Internet photo forums. The "essays" are generally barely formed and quite short. They're nearly all peppered with platitudes (ex: shoot what you love, be yourself,...) and self-aggrandizing anecdotes (I've been shooting for "x" years, I've driven lots of race cars...). Each little "essay" is sub-headed with a quote usually attributed to celebrated photographers. By the fourth or fifth "essay" this formula, and the author's incessant use of negative contrasts (i.e. what "BAD" photographers do) became very tiresome.

I knew nothing about the author. I had never heard of him and knew nothing of his photography. A quick search revealed that his celebrity seemed to stem from his Internet presence and that he has recently "retired" from the Internet, perhaps due to some controversial episode. This might explain the rather pervasive defensive undertone found throughout many of the "essays".

Honestly it's hard to imagine anyone devoted to photography finding much enlightenment or inspiration from this collection of shards of thoughts. The $0.99 price of the Kindle edition would seem just about right, but I still recommend downloading a sample before buying the full work.

If you're looking for real essays of photography I recommend the two writers I mentioned previously. Vicki Goldberg's "Light Matters" and Tod Papageorge's "Core Curriculum" are not available on Kindle but are both outstanding works from Aperture that you'll re-read for a lifetime.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Uncommon Wisdom for the taking 13. August 2014
Von Dan Michaelsen - Veröffentlicht auf

I like this guy! Oddly, I had not heard of Scott Bourne (he seems not to have a huge following in western Mongolia where I live), and bought his book on a whim electronically on Amazon.

In his essays, Mr. Bourne shares his insights and opinions on photography and its place in the world. His messages are rough and unvarnished, and spoken with the authority of a veteran image maker who has earned the right to call 'em as he sees 'em. No pulled punches or political correctness here.

Like a well-wielded scalpel, these essays slice through the of pretentiousness that has sprung up around the photo-gear cult, fanned by social media "critics", and get to the very heart of what is important in the craft, namely THE IMAGE.

Mr. Bourne's style is informal and concise. Reading these essays was like sitting down for a chat with your favorite cranky uncle, and afterwards realizing how much you learned.

I was so pleased to discover this gem, and enjoyed every word. The book oozes authoritative wisdom that is uncommon in this day and age. Thoroughly recommended!

Most books on photography are about photography. This book of essays is about the photographer. Scott Bourne helps us look into ourselves as photographers. His lessons will help me become a better photographer even though he never mentioned what f-stop to use!!!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Like a series of conversations with a master photographer. 13. August 2014

This is an outstanding book of short essays. It is the kind of thing you'd learn over a year or two working as Scott's assistant. Don't get me wrong -- there's nothing here about how to set up lights or choose exposure settings. It's more like the kinds of things you'd learn while driving the van to some interesting location. Scott shares all his "secrets" (another word for experience).

All you have to do is listen.
