Kurzbeschreibung
Winning values and the knowledge of what is right and wrong don’t change much from generation to generation. Strategies for living your life and making the most out of your time spent on earth have not changed much either. “7 Laws of Surfing” is not a timely book, nor was it meant to be. If you can’t set about doing something in your life that has a chance to last a thousand years, then what are you doing with your time? This book is part of my answer to that question.
The convention of using metaphor to express ideas is tattered in most attempts. The problem: I love surfing the waves of the ocean. That love has worked its ways so deep into my soul that I often look at the world through the lessons I have learned on the ocean.
A surfer I am, but I am also passionate about business. My mother is a scientist, musician, and artist. My father a businessman and writer who loved to play piano and violin. Sometimes I wish my passion would have been for another field of endeavor. For example, I love to write, play and record music. But I have learned that I am a business warrior at my core. I have come to accept who I am.
“7 Laws of Surfing” was not hard for me to write. It was given to me one piece at a time over three years as I sat out in the line-up at Steamer’s Lane, 38th, Sharks, Privates, County Line, Ray Bay, The Pier, Huntington Beach, Swami’s, Trestles, S’s, Hanalei Bay, Pine Trees, Ollie’s Point, Playa Guiones, and other surf breaks around the world. Surfing’s parallel lessons for life and business flowed to me and I felt compelled to get these ideas down in writing and to share it with those who might have interest.
This book is for business-minded people who nurture their spiritual being as well as the high-stakes hunter within them. The further along you are in your study of business the more sense this book will make. You will, however, have to find your own meanings in what you read. I have learned to be wary of those who would give me the answers to life. And I have accepted the challenge of making sense of what is presented to me in my own way. I know you will too.
Think of “7 Laws of Surfing” as a tool that you can use from time to time to re-energize your spirit and spark the odd new idea here and there. Read the book once. Then turn through the book’s pages and let your eyes find the page that might make some sense to you at that moment. Use these words as a catalyst for creating new directions and sustaining that which you hold dear.
As for sustaining that which I hold dear, these pages are also for my children and our family’s generations hereafter. This is who I am, or was at the beginning of the 21st century. I am making an effort to help you understand yourself by knowing in part who has come before you. I ask that you do the same for those that come after you. What follows are guide posts for what I believe will help you make a good life, no matter your interests. And if you are a business animal like I am, perhaps you will find the tip for a spear somewhere in these pages. I believe the laws of surfing apply to all of what we do and say and I am passing this gift on to you.
I ask the reader to be clear in your role as a shepherd for your future generations. Do the things that are necessary for the generation coming 1100 years later to live a life of high purpose guided by time-honored values. Teach your children to think the same way about raising their children. Do this with kindness and love.
