Overpriced thin book 25. November 2011
Von Kevin R Cox - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
There are 50 tips in 52 page, so about a tip per page, but really some are longer (like 2 pages) and some are just a paragraph. The information seems to be dated quickly as the version of MongoDB rolls forward and new features are implemented. Some of the tips are more like workarounds for incomplete areas in MongoDB, but they are valuable when needed. If you asked me if I would buy again, I would answer no. The book is overpriced for the content and is just a list of tips. I'm giving mine to a friend...

Short, to the point 28. Mai 2011
Von John Brady - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
50 Tips & Tricks for MongoDB Developers is a new offering from O'Reilly in the shorter (66 pages in the ebook format) but more current format they seem to have recently adopted.

The audience for the book is described as those who know the basics of MongoDB, but need to go further. In my opinion, it would be most useful to developers or users who have implemented at least one application beyond the samples and quickstart materials at mongodb.org. If you have not actually used MongoDB for even simple test applications, many of the tips will be academic exercises, nice to know, but not necessarily immediately applicable.

As for the tips themselves, your mileage may vary according to your application needs, but there is a nice mix of topics, from design to optimization. The author's writing style is direct and most examples are straightforward and easily assimilated.

Since I have used MongoDB only for testing and small in-house applications, my only gauge of accuracy was in the tips related to indexing. The text matched my experiences with the product. Kristina Chodorow, the author, could be considered somewhat authoritative as she is the maintainer of several Mongo drivers (typos excepted).

Overall, yes, you can find all this information on the internet, but the book will save you time and appears to be offered in e-book format at a reasonable price point.

It's like having my own Consultant. 16. Juni 2011
Von Gregory Zentkovich - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
I have been using MongoDB in my last couple of projects and really like it. But there was a bit of a learning curve that I would liken to my jump from programming in procedural to object oriented - just wrapping your mind around a new way of doing something really absorbs a lot of time and energy. I have the Definitive Guide to MongoDB which Kristina co-authored, and found it to be a great resource in making that transition. However, taking that massive amount of new information, along with day to day developing, and finding the time to figure out, first things, first in fine tuning my DBs was a real challenge. That's where this book became my fastback. 50 tips and tricks was like having my own consultant advising me on the best practices for my MongoDB. Kristina has a really nice straight forward way of explaining the material in an easy to understand format. The tips, in my opinion, are invaluable for both database admins, and developers alike. I would recommend this book as a companion book to the definitive guide to MongoDB by the same author because together, they build a solid foundation for MongoDB.
Answers to unavoidable design questions centralized in one place! Great for beginners who already know the basics. 24. Oktober 2014

Exactly what I was looking for: an expert sharing to-the-point important tips in building a mongodb database without having a ton of experience. This book will save you lot's of time. It will not teach you the basics, but assuming you've got that covered it will help you tackle unavoidable design questions such as normalizing or de-normalizing, the proper way to store data types such as dates, most efficient aggregation techniques... just to name a tiny few. I absolutely love the author's approach of simply going through the list of tips and its related solution as opposed to trying to cover mongodb from A-Z... Great work thanks!

Great book for a even better product
It covers every single aspect you have to take into account when building an optimize application using a great nosql database
