After ten years with the group, we left disillusioned and confused. We began asking questions and looking for the roots of our belief system. Our search led us back four hundred years to the genesis of the concept of Masters. What we discovered shocked us.
Meanwhile, we stayed abreast of developments in CUT and spoke with ex-members and members who who were in the process of leaving. In response to Prophets messages in the 1980s, members relocated to Montana from across the United States, and around the world. They built bomb shelters and gathered supplies in preparation for prophesied calamity. In 1990, Prophet, her family, and staff hunkered underground in the largest (756-person) privately-owned bomb shelter in the United States, in expectation of nuclear warArmageddon. Youll discover what motivated people to prepare for disaster . . . and what happened.
The book is divided into four sections. In Part I, Our Journey, you learn who we are and why we joined CUT. Our stories are similar to thousands of others who heard the call of the Masters and forsook all to follow them. We bare our souls so you can understand why people join and stay with CUT and similar groups. Follow us from their world headquarters, dubbed Camelot, to their survivalist retreat in Montana.
Part II, Masters and Their Messengers, documents the history of the Masters and the people who claim to write and speak for them. We identify the sources for the concept of Masters beginning four hundred years ago and follow the creation and expansion of the idea through later groups. The words and actions of the messengers will help you unveil their true nature.
Part III, Common Threads, traces elements shared by groups that claim to be founded and directed by the Masters. We explore the messengers motivations, the treatment of members, and discuss some of the fundamental teachings of the Masters. The background of the Masters Saint Germain, El Morya, and Kuthumi are explored, along with the source of concepts like the I AM Presence and the ascension. Scientific teachings, as presented by the messengers, are also included so you can compare them with current scientific knowledge.
Part IV, Know Thyself, addresses the issue of phenomena and personal experiences by exploring a variety of possibilities for peoples mystical encounters. In conclusion, we offer ex-members ideas on life after their involvement with a Masters group

In today's world of new spiritual groups sincere seekers have many paths to choose from. Not all of these paths are harmless, as pointed out in this excellent book. "400 Years of Imaginary Friends". This book gives a broad historical view into many of these groups. Who are these messengers of ascended masters "channeling" information? Where does the information come from and how is it used in many cases to control followers of what appears to be well meaning groups? What is behind the beautifuly portrayed graphics and words of seemingly harmless groups? Read this book and find out. You will be glad you did. This book is important not only for seekers but for parents and relatives of those exploring these types of groups. I do not find it biased in any way and rate it 5 stars.

400 Years Of Imaginary Friends: A Journey Into The World Of Adepts, Masters, Ascended Masters, And Their Messengers is a fascinating, detailed, definitive survey and study of why people get into cult-like groups, why they stay, and why they leave. Based upon extensive personal experience and research, Kenneth and Talita Paolini share their adventures among such groups as the "Church Universal and Triumphant", and follows the history of the concept of "Master" through Rosicrucianism, Freemasonry, Spiritualism, New Thought, Theosophy, Agni Yoga, I AM, Bridge to Freedom, and The Temple of the Presence. An evolution of the belief system developed by Rosenkreuz, Swedenborg, Mesmer, Fox, Quimby, Eddy, Blavatsky, Leadbeater, Baily, Krishnamurit, Roerichs, Ballards, Innocente, Prophets, and Shearers are thoroughly and accurately presented. The Paolini's also explore a variety of possibilities for people's mystical encounters and conclude by offering ex-members of these various groups sound ideas on life after involvement with a "Masters" group. Well-researched, clearly written, 400 Years Of Imaginary Friends demystifies the web of assumptions, deceptions, and self-rationalizations that surrounds the Masters and the messengers.

As we approach the new millennium, latter twentieth-century civilization is painfully aware of the presence of destructive religious cults in our midst. Jim Jones, David Koresh, and Heaven's Gate have become household names. And the megalomania of self-styled gurus has not been confined to American shores as evidenced by the saran gas attack in the Tokyo subway spawned by Shoko Asahara and his Aum Supreme Truth movement. But what of other cults that have not achieved the notoriety of the aforementioned? Were they, and are they, evolving in the same direction? Is their goal the establishment of a national or worldwide theocracy with their leaders at the head? And is there a tragic flaw in the psyche that leaves even the most intelligent of humankind defenseless against the subtle advances of these superficially benign organizations? Kenneth and Talita Paolini take us by the hand as they retrace their personal experience within the cult of Church Universal and Triumphant. They provide a first hand glimpse into the life and self-deluded omnipotence of its leader Elizabeth Clare Prophet. But their analysis of how they got there, why they stayed, and what enabled them to free themselves from this cult's entrapment is taken a giant step further. They have plowed through the walls of defenses set up by this cult to reveal not only its own particular chicanery, but that of its predecessors upon which its foundation is built. They have laid bare that which has heretofore prevented members and all others from witnessing and connecting their collective fraud to their origins. The Paolinis have taken the time to investigate, expose, and link one of the most insidious multi-faceted cult movements of the last few centuries: the world of adepts, masters, ascended masters, and their messengers. And while they focus on the deception of these organizations in the past and present, their book serves as a warning to those who would entertain and embrace such organizations in the future.
