Greg Iles's explosive suspense thriller 24 Hours gets off to a blistering start: the kidnapping of a little boy--in eight breathless pages--that culminates with the child's safe return and the disappearance of the successful kidnappers. That sets the stage for the book's centrepiece, the abduction of little Abby Jennings, daughter of Will, a successful physician and Karen, a slightly dissatisfied suburban woman who's wondering where the passion in her marriage went. The criminals' modus operandi is established early on. They target the progeny of Mississippi doctors, demand a reasonable (to an affluent MD) ransom, release the child after the money's been paid and promise the victim's parents that if they ever breathe a word of the incident to anyone, their child will be taken again and killed. The kidnappings are carefully set up, targeted to take place when one parent is out of town at a medical meeting or convention, thus ensuring the cooperation of the other. And the victim is held by a sweet, slightly retarded but humongous and powerful man whose loyalty to his cousin, the mastermind, is unquestioned.
24 Hours is a version of the locked room school of kidnap mysteries and a very good one indeed, especially when Will turns the tables on the kidnapper and takes control of the situation. Abby's diabetic condition (she needs lifesaving injections on a regular basis) notches the suspense up one last turn. It's a well worked-out plot, the pacing is terrific and the characters likeable and attractive. Iles is a master storyteller and this one has big screen written all over it--with Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer as the Jennings, if we're lucky. --Jane Adams

Das Buche habe ich mir im Bahnhof als "leichte" Lektüre für die Reise gekauft ... ich habe von der Reise kaum etwas mitbekommen. Das Buch drecht innerhalb der ersten Seiten die Spannung auf und hält die bis zum Schuß. Der Erzählstil ist genial. Der ständige Szenenwechsel führt dazu dass im Kopf tatsächlich ein Film abläuft. Am Ende dreht die Story dann von absolutem Realismus doch sehr ins phantastisch Überzogene aber das kann sich der Autor gegen Ende des Buches gerne erlauben, man muß ja auch wieder aus der Story raus finden ;-)
Verbrechen könnte in seiner Einfachheit und "Genialität" tatsächlich so ablaufen ... Ach, ja: ich habe mir das englische Original gegönnt und eine Zugfahrt Stuttgart Köln und eine Köln München mit Rückfahrt dafür gebraucht.

The first 300 pages are a first class thriller with an excellent kidnapping scheme. Things which could happen. Unfortunately during the last 150 pages the author is just desperately trying to find an ending to the story. The result are rather unbelievable and uninteresting happenings. Planes landing on highways. Everybody shooting at everybody and (you wont believe it) with a happy ending. I was indeed happy that the book was finished. 3 stars for the 300 first pages.

this book held my interest right from the start, fast paced, even though you know *what* is going to happen in the end, you just dont know *how*, really very good. I would definatly recommend this book to anyone who likes a good page turner.

I've read a few Iles books now, and 24 Hours didn't let me down! Fast paced, lots of action. A page turner that kept me up far too late, several nights in a row. It's one of those reads that you have to know what's going to happen next. Iles appears to be one of these rare authors who doesn't go down-hill after the first big hit (Cornwell maybe?). Not the book of the century, but a fun, fast read.

The story never relents for a moment longer than you want. It only pauses long enough for you to catch your breath, and keeps you on the edge of your seat. It seemed like such a fast read because I couldn't put it down. After all, not every book needs to devote two pages to describing each new scene. There are some parts that will beg you to suspend your disbelief. By the time you reach those parts, you will believe the characters are capable of anything. Really good story! (Way better than the movie [Trapped] based on the book)
