Fred Reinfeld's "1001 Checkmates" gives hundreds of positions which are apparently drawn from actual game situations, and the student who applies himself to the book can take away practical knowledge that will help in actual play. The positions in "202 Surprising Checkmates" could never be mistaken for actual game situations, and the mating patterns are not normally seen in actual play. Although the book appears to have little practical value, the problems were both challenging and entertaining.

Makes you look carefully

As another reviewer wrote, these are not real game type positions. If you want that, try 303 Tricky Checkmates by these same authors. However, these positions are very helpful for making the student look carefully. The first 100 problems are checkmates in 1, but these are not your typical mate in 1 problems. They are hard, because when you move a piece, you end up blocking or unblocking another. Sometimes you cannot make the move that seems to mate because of a pin. These are things that beginner level players often overlook and that makes this book good training material.

If you like this volume, you might want to "check" out "303 Tricky Checkmates" by the same authors.
Don't waste your money on this book nor anything by the same author

I bought two book from the same author and both are total waste of my hard earned money.
The checkmate position are so dumb and useless (none are from real game and none will be seen in real game).
It doesn't help you to improve your chess at all. I think the author is a shame in the chess world, how can someone put together such a book. Any real chess player could tell this is a useless book after reading just few position in it.
