A Good First Look at the Life of Jesus 26. März 2012
Von Richard Burkey Lifelong Learner - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
Add the days of Jesus public ministry and you end up with 1000 Days according to Jonathan Falwell's new book, "The Ministry of Christ 1000 Days". Falwell provides a 180 page overview of the public ministry of Jesus, affirming that Jesus' ministry is more than do's and don'ts, but is a relationship with a God who cares. And yes, Jonathan Falwell is related to Jerry Falwell, he's his son. Jonathan serves as Senior Pastor of Thomas Road Baptist Church as well as vice-chancellor for spiritual affairs at Liberty University.

Falwell's goal in writing the book is "a journey to know His teachings and example and grow to love and serve Him in a new way." In working through the 1000 days of Jesus ministry the challenge ins to watch what Jesus does and become God followers.

The greatest strength of the book is Jonathan's use of questions. In addition to the small group study at the end of each of the 15 chapters and the accompanying Bible Study guide at the end of the book, there are key questions in chapters throughout the book. Questions like:

Why should we listen to Jesus?

How would it look to receive Jesus message?

What do you and I need to drop? What is it today that you are holding on to, not willing to give up because it feels safe?

What does it mean to truly follow Jesus?

What storm do you need Jesus to calm?

Jesus is asking: Are you going to love this person the way I love you?

What do you value more than anything else?

Will I follow Jesus no matter what?

In addition there are 8 questions that tie into the Beatitudes in chapter 4 and 5 questions that look at one's hypocrisy level in chapter 7.

The result of these questions is an opportunity to not only look at 1000 days of Jesus ministry 2000 years ago, but Jesus ministry in my life today. For readers who want to go deeper there is a special web site: That web site takes the lessons of the book and provides accompanying video, small group guide, a 100 day Gospel reading plan as well as the sermons that make up the book.

An additional plus to the book is the list of 100 Main Events in Jesus' Life at the back of the book. This not only provides a detailed look at Jesus life but provides Biblical citations to read more about each event. For one who wants a more chronological study of Jesus' life this is a good place to dig.

Though I appreciated Jonathan's conversational style in writing, his study of the meaning of Greek words and the occasional insight of the geography of Israel, I did not find this to be an in-depth look at Jesus life. I expected a process that would track year by year, but the chapters were guided more by themes then times. Chapter 10 deals with the temptations of Jesus in the wilderness, an event that happens early on in Jesus ministry. Having said that if one is looking for an initial look at the life of Jesus 1000 Days provides a good overview and a guide to dig deeper. I give the book 4 out of 5 stars.

1000 Days Review 21. März 2012
Von amymaimee - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
This book is basically a walk through the ministry of Jesus Christ during the 1000 days before his death and resurrection. I thought it was an interesting read, and it helped me to learn more about Jesus and his teachings. This would be a nice Bible study to do in a group setting, or on your own. At the end of each chapter are questions to answer as well. I think this book would be best for someone who is just learning about Christianity, or a new Christian, though the book is meant for Christians in all walks of life. It is not really a biography, rather the emphasis is on the reader and how the ministry of Christ can impact them.

Hesitate to Rave 13. Juni 2012
Von Christy - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
1000 Days was a very basic look at the life of Christ. I am thankful that books like this are written to familiarize people with the One Life that can save all lives, because our culture can always use a little more Jesus.

Unfortunately, I hesitate to rave about it.

While it provides a great Cliff's notes version of the gospels, I was hoping for a deeper dive into the details. I wanted more of Jesus than I already have. I realize that's a tall order sometimes, but I was hoping for a second-generation pastor's insightful revelations from the nuances of Scripture, or the science of language to be brought into my already strong foundation on who Jesus was and what He did.

I can forgive that, but I was a bit perturbed as I read on, and I began to see what appears to me to be some additional layers added to scripture that... really aren't in scripture.

My first slight disagreement came in the first chapter when Falwell states that Jesus didn't need to provide the ministry of 1000 days, but He did anyway. My antennas went up, wondering, "If he hadn't provided us an example of how to live among our culture, he'd have a hard time commanding us to make disciples and all that great commission stuff, since we wouldn't know how." As I continue to ponder that today, I have to wonder why we only consider these three years to be the "ministry" of Christ. It seems to partition ministry from everyday life, which takes me to the ongoing issue I hold with the division between clergy and laity. There is no priesthood... but I digress.

As the book progresses, Falwell applies what I consider to be his own filters to the beatitudes, such as "blessed are those who mourn over sin, for they will be comforted." It's not a false statement, but, really, the Bible just leaves it at "blessed are those who mourn for they will be comforted." He narrows the Scripture down to only one particular type of mourning, and I take a bit of exception to that, since it is perfectly worthy of God's comfort if you're just... mourning... innocently.

These pockets of opinion are all over the book, and it stacks up to what amounts to me as a very slanted view of the ministry and expectations of Christ, so, I can't really recommend it as a pure read.

My honest opinion is, if you want to know more about Christ, read the Bible and ask the Holy Spirit to guide your understanding. You'll likely come away with less opinion and more truth.

A decent insight about Jesus' ministry 28. August 2012
Von Michael Levitt - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
Falwell's book chronicling Jesus' 1000 days of ministry is a good summary of how Jesus worked while on earth.

By no means is this book a replacement of the Scriptures, but it does shed some light into Jesus' mission. The reader should focus on the Scriptural references.

It's not as in depth as I would have hoped, but it's still a worthy read.

A different way for the Holy Spirit to Reach you 18. September 2012
Von Joseph Siegler - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe Vine Kundenrezension eines kostenfreien Produkts ( Was ist das? )
The Ministry of Christ 1000 Days was written by pastor Jonathan Falwell.

This book is written in a way that's easier to take than some other books like this. An awful lot of books of this nature are preachy, get bogged down in "teaching", and ultimately that is what this is about too, it's just done in a different style. If you've tried books like this before, and have checked out, give this one a try.

I could write a lot about this book (as Jesus' word and message is both simple and complicated), but I'll keep it simple here. It's about Jesus' teachings and ministry on the Earth 2000 odd years ago. This is powerful stuff for me anyway, because when I do read about Jesus' ministry, it convicts me in that I spend so much of my life on trivial crud like I do. The Holy Sprit can speak to you through works like this if you let it. Give the book a try, you might find a message in Rev Falwell's book.

There are also bits towards the end that go into a more detailed bible study will be of greater use. Reading God's word is always a good thing. But I find it sometimes helps to do it in groups, so there's some interactive discussion.

As one other reviewer of this book wrote, "By no means is this book a replacement of the Scriptures, but it does shed some light into Jesus' mission."

Also, I suggest after you've read it, do what I did and pass it on to your church's library (assuming you have one). That way others can share in it, instead of the book collecting dust on your own bookshelf. Philemon 1:6 comes to mind here.
