"* 'Kemp uses 100 hieroglyphs as a springboard for discussion of a range of topics... This clever premise works well... enjoyable and informative volume' THES * 'Barry Kemp's book is a capsule key to the ancient Egyptian mind' Dr. Norman Hammond, Archaeology Correspondent, The Times * 'The author not only reveals day to day life in ancient Egypt but builds a fascinating picture of the historical and mythological references which were the cornerstone of Egyptian thought. This is most certainly a book that will challenge and reward' New World * 'A fascinating tour of the most significant hieroglyphs and the people who created them' VeloCity magazine"

Egyptian culture is divided from us by several millennia, a lost people and a dead language. We can discover much about this fascinating civilization from its physical remains, but perhaps the greatest insights into the Egyptian mind come from Egyptian hieroglyphs. They reveal the priorities, concerns and beliefs of the Egyptians - a whole worldview. Unlike the Western alphabet, which is an arbitrary set of symbols not anchored in reality, each Egyptian hieroglyph denotes a concept central to Egyptian thinking. The language and its written form is intimately bound up with the imaginative world of the Egyptians. Here, Barry Kemp presents 100 of the Egyptian hieroglyphs to provide access to this unique culture. Kemp takes us on a journey through the Egyptian mind, revealing not only aspects of day-to-day life in Ancient Egypt, but gradually building a picture of the historical and mythological references that were the cornerstones of Egyptian thought. This fascinating book helps us get inside a long-vanished world.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Highly recommended introduction to the fascinating subject of ancient, Egyptian hieroglyphs and culture! 8. Oktober 2014

This book is truly a must for anyone seriously or even casually interested in the fascinating subject of Egyptology. The author is a very respected authority on the subject and writes in a clear, concise manner which helps his readers understand the many aspects of a complex subject. No culture, alive or dead, can be truly understood without attention to that culture's language. Ancient Egyptian culture is extinct, but since Jean-Francois Champollion's epic contribution in ushering in the age of decipherment, we now have a very good understanding of about every one of the 300+ hieroglyphs that were used over the centuries. Dr. Kemp has limited his focus to 100 hieroglyphs that he chose to illustrate this beautiful, written language. Each hieroglyph treatment is a chapter in the book. It starts with a graphic representation of the glyph and then goes on to explain not just its meaning but the many cultural connections that the glyph had within Egyptian society as we now understand it. I very highly recommend this book. You may not put it down "thinking like an Egyptian" but your world will be enhanced and enriched by Dr. Kemp's personal insight into hieroglyphs and the ancient culture that designed and employed them.
